Gere apologizes in kissing controversy

By GAVIN RABINOWITZ, Associated Press Writer

NEW DELHI - Richard Gere tried to quell the storm over a public kiss he gave a Bollywood star at an AIDS awareness event, apologizing Friday for any offense

Gere's embrace and kiss of actress Shilpa Shetty sparked several noisy demonstrations by hard-line Hindu groups and a flurry of legal complaints, which ended with a judge in the northwestern city of Jaipur issuing an arrest warrant for the two stars for violating obscenity laws.

"What is most important to me is that my intentions as an HIV/AIDS advocate be made clear, and that my friends in India understand that it has never been, nor could it ever be, my intention to offend you," Gere said in statement issued by the Heroes Project, an organization the 57-year-old actor co-founded to combat AIDS in India.

"If that has happened, of course it is easy for me to offer a sincere apology," he said.

The embrace, in front of about 4,000 truckers, was a failed parody of a move from Gere's film "Shall We Dance," and "a naive misread of Indian customs," he said

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Didn't they also want to have Elizebeth Hurley and Arun Nayar arrested and/or tried for violating some sort of cultural or religious, by having alcohol at their wedding in India, and because Liz wore leather shoes? I thought I read something along those lines a few weeks ago....

I understand respecting the cultural norms when you're in a different country....and heck be forced topay a fine if you violate one of those laws/norms, but an arrest warrant? A bit over the top....IMHO.

Welcome to the 6th century.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

I think I almost got arrested for kissing my wife at the airport before I left. Everyone, the security, the police was standing inside the building observing our actions. I didn't know at that time about actions like those may lead to legal problems. Now, I'll be a little more careful.

MUMBAI, India - Five months later, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is still feeling the effects of a kiss from Richard Gere. Immigration officials at Mumbai airport briefly detained Shetty, saying she was still wanted for obscenity charges filed in the wake of the public kiss with the Hollywood star, her publicist, Dale Bhagwagar, said Thursday.

Shetty was in tears late Wednesday after being stopped at the airport while on her way to Berlin where the musical "Miss Bollywood" opens this weekend, said Bhagwagar. Shetty plays the musical's lead role.

"She called me in the middle of the night and was in tears," said Bhagwagar, adding Shetty was finally permitted to join her dance troupe after prolonged questioning.
