Do you use UBER in the Philippines?       Grab is becoming annoying spyware and UBER is not keep your CC info secure .. hello jeepney!

Uber Suffer Security Breach, Then Fails to Properly Inform

Uber has found themselves in serious trouble, after officials found the company suffered a security breach last year and went to great lengths to cover it up.  Instead of properly informing the 57 million customers and drivers the breach impacted, the chief security officer paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the stolen information.

Beyond failing to disclose the breach, paying the hackers is a major mistake.  First, the company has no way to know if the information was indeed deleted.  Second, there are minimal ways to know if the information was sold on the dark web.

Because of this security breach, Uber customers and drivers are now facing an additional threat.  Hackers will likely begin using the email accounts associated with the breach to distribute phishing scams.  According to KnowBe4, these emails will likely be scripted like some notification email informing breach victims their accounts have been hacked.

If you are an Uber customer, it is encouraged you take the following steps:

  1. Access the Uber app and change your login credentials.
  2. If you used the same password for alternative accounts, change those passwords as well.
  3. Be on the lookout for malicious emails.  They may look like they’re from Uber, or they may look like they’re from other businesses.  Be wary when clicking on emails, links, and attachments.  If you’re not expecting the email or don’t know the sender, delete the email.

They didn't just not inform their people but they actively tried to hide it away from consumers.

Ya they paid $100k thinking the hacker is an honorable person and will delete all he had stole ...

As the saying goes - stupid is as stupid does.

The other thing that bothers me with UBER is if you need to cancel the ride... ya know the driver is taking too long to arrive .. so you cancel, UBER nails you for P100 cancellation fee.

I have never ever used Uber either in the USA or the Philippines.

I am not a big fan of them at all for some of their shady business practices. I am not a fan of the taxis either but what Uber is doing by trying to price them out of the market here in the USA is bad. They have never not once posted a profit AT ALL, and are basically running through the venture capital money they got.

Also I have heard of a new practice here in the USA where the driver is trying to scam the passenger out of $100 a pop. Where the driver claims the passenger left it dirty and gets $100 to clean it.

I don't get too worked up about CC information getting stolen anymore.  Seems like normal stuff now of days.  Equifax got hacked recently and exposed like 147 million accounts.

I think this kind of stuff is part of running a business now of days, and besides if they did report it would most people do anything different, I for one wouldn't.

Just when you think you have TDS eradicate,  a new case shows up.

CC info being stolen is a big deal.. mostly for the CC company, and their response normally is to issue new CCs.   But if a person is using a DEBIT card it is a big deal for that person as a DEBIT card does not carry the same protections.

Because Credit Card companies are nothing but a leech for business, it is like a mafia based business.  They are in a no loose situation.  Pay your card late and you get a low 20% interest rate, not a bad gig if you can legally do it.

They basically skim 3% off your profits as a business owner, I quit taking credit cards long time ago.  I have a buddy who owns a chain burger joint similar to a Chili's.  He said he would be better off not taking CC and getting hit for bad checks vs paying CC fees for the year.

The days of low CC interest rates left when Congress changed the rules, now everyone is slapped hard

Some blame the greedy corporations for this and want big government to save us. Corporations (or any business for that matter) has one objective...Make money. So you can't blame them for doing what they are supposed to do. On the other hand the politicians have one job...To represent their constituents. The problem is that most politicians forget this and take on the same goal of businesses and that is to make money. They get paid off by lobbyists to pass laws favorable to corporations that are harmful to the public.  Chris Duffy is right that CC companies are more like the mafia now with all of the rates and fees they have it's probably cheaper to get money from a loan shark.

Sorry to get all political but I couldn't resist :D

I agree... and that why there should be NO lobbying, and ... will .. the list gets long and varied regarding congress.. term limits..  no special treatment, same medical, same pension as the average "Joe government employee".... open to annual audits .. yada.. yada...  they receive a buck they better have a clear history of it origin... which doesn't include "selling their vote"

With term limits it would be next to impossible for a congressman to get a pension... ;)     (but then I don't think a past president should get money either, or secret service ... Truman when home without it .. good enough for the rest)

Yikes!!   Good thing this isn't a visa question topic .. just an UBER slam

Amen to that, and the sad thing is that to get any of that implemented Congress would have to vote on it. That's like handing them a gun and telling them to shoot themselves in the foot. That's why we desperately need a convention of states so we the people can go around them to get the country back on track.

Yes ... a Convention of States to implement if Congress refuses ... and that takes We The People forcing our states to step up.

Same can be said for the sales tax .. grab a percentage right off the top.

The Idiot called Obama seemed to do that, Yes we used to have lower rates.

I remember about 15 years ago my Credit Card company called me and asked me if I wanted a cash advance, I asked them what the terms were.  It was 6 month interest free and a $75 transaction fee.  Well I said lets do it, they transferred almost $30K to my bank account, I had my wife at the time call in and they gave her like $25K.  I went out and found a house that needed some work, I purchased it and rehabbed it and came out smelling like a rose.  Them days are long gone now of days.

Dude, I had a Platinum Visa card with a $8k limit on it as a 18yr old Senior in HS. That card and my stupid spending put me in debt for many years to come.
