Advice regarding passport for IV

I am way ahead of myself here as we have just received our NOA2 howverr , my current UK passport is under my maiden name still as, I have until 2020 until it expires and when I married my husband I didn't change it because I was told I can have it legally until it expires ... However I was thinking when it comes to finally receiving the immigrant visa which, will be inside my passport and in my married name will this cause an issue at the port of entry regarding my passport still been in my maiden name ?

 

I will have documents to prove my marriage etc etc but I just didn't know if it's worth changing my passport over now whilst we are going through the visa process ? I though it may not be an issue if I can just keep it as my maiden name on my passport as long as this is stated on my visa application as my previous  name before getting married surely this will not be a problem ... but I thought I would ask if anyone maybe knew the answer before things start moving forward once we receive our case number for our visa application .

Your visa will have to match the passport name.  Your greencard will match the visa. Changing the greencard name later costs around $400.

 

What is the main reason you don't want your passport, visa, and greencard to match? 

1. You want to continue to book international airline tickets in your maiden name despite having everything else in your married name.
2. The cost? It will cost you £30 more renewing from the US.
3. The bother? You'll have to mail your passport back to the U.K. and wait longer for renewal, plus figure out where to get U.K. passport size photos taken in the US.

Considering you will get 10 more years plus some additional time for your unexpired portion, it really will make things easier to renew while you're still in the country.

Okay so I wasn't stating I don't want my passport, visa and green card to match what I was saying was the reason I didn't change my passport was because I'm the UK i am legally able to keep my passport under my maiden name unti it expires as long as any revalue is booked under this name so what I was saying was .... now this visa process has come along would I need to have my passport in my married name that's all there was no reasons why I wouldn't want this apart from it been legal here in the UK to keep a maiden name until it expires that's all

And when you do move, make sure you have multiple originals of other UK documents such as birth certificate and marriage certificate (if married in UK) as it takes longer to get them from overseas and you will need them for all sorts of th ings over the next years. We left Australia with 5 originals of all these documents.. yea an expense at the time, but worth it!

That reply was just to throw out reasons for/against changing passports. More rhetorical than you specifically saying it was your desire. Sorry if it came across wrong. 

 

I think it works out better for a K1 fiancé (over a CR1 spouse) to keep the passport longer term in the maiden name simply because the visa is going to be in the same name and there is no greencard attached as the bonus at the end of the visa. K1s can apply for a greencard in a new married name despite what their passport says. And they can use that passport for a number of years fairly easily. For a CR1, it will be easier to change now since you already legally have a new surname.

I am doing the same- renewing my passport while the process - dont forget to bring old and new passport to the embassy for interview.

And i think that the new passport number should be written in form DS-260 - i think thats nvc.

But I won't have my old passport as you have to send it back when renewing ? Do they send old passport back to you ?

if thats what they do in your country, I would put it the way, like you lost your passport, so you dont have to give it anyone. you might just pay a little fee. ButThat way you will have it. and if anyone ask in future, you can always say you find it recently.

Yes, the UK returns your old passport with a corner clipped to show it is no longer valid.

 

At a London interview, it doesn't matter if you show up with a passport you just picked up the day before. They don't care about your old passport or what was on the DS-260. As long as your passport is valid and the photo looks like you then no issues. Many have renewed passport shortly before their London interview and reported their experiences. Some have commented that they showed up with old/new passport and got funny looks like "why are you showing me this old passport? and only the new one was taken from them.

If you want your visa and green card in your married name you need to change your passport now. If not the Visa will be issued in your passport name. Then when you enter and get your green card it will again be in your maiden name. The only way to get the visa in your married name is to renew your passport with updated name. 

 

You only have roughly 2 yrs on that passport. It would be a lot less work to renew now and get your visa in your married name. 

 

Many countries do the same with allowing the maiden name to be kept in the passport until it's expired.
