What's your wife legal status in the country you're living in?  If she is only a visitor, not allowed to work and move as she wants, I could see wanting to move to a country where she would have legal status (US or elsewhere). 

 

Otherwise, I'm afraid you played a big role in your current situation and you are still digging.
