Tax transcripts or tax accountant records

Good afternoon everybody 

 

i am just about to submit my citizenship paperwork- yay for me!!!!- I am doing it under the 3 year married to a USC even though I am close to 5 years living here - just a bit slow getting around to it.

 

okay question is can you submit a mixture of tax transcripts and tax accountant records?  My husband and I did joint tax returns for three years and this last year we filed married but filed individual.

 

Can somebody please help me with the answer to this question?

Tax transcripts would be better than the tax returns.  If you do choose to do the tax return route make sure you include a copy of the ENTIRE return including all schedules, w2s, etc..

Tax transcripts are easier to submit and free to obtain from the IRS website---it's about a 10 business day turnaround time so you'll get them quickly if that's a concern for you.  Make sure you keep a copy for your own records too before submitting with your application.

 

By the way...how "close" are you to the 5-year eligibility?  The reason I ask, is that if you've waited this long to file and only have a month or so before being eligible for the 5-year filing, I would suggest that as the best route to go since your required documents with filing is pretty much nothing at that point then, and the process to naturalization becomes a bit more streamlined all-around.

I really do understand that the transcripts would be better but when I go onto the IRS website it is say my information is invalid.  I have reached out to the tax accountant to see if she can get the last transcript.

I am only about 6 months out from my 5 year and I thought about it.... maybe it is a good idea, I have waited this long why not wait a little bit longer

You have to use the USC's information, not yours, when ordering them.

You can also go into any IRS office and ask for them. My husband had issues with his online too.

But in your case I'd honestly just wait to file. I'm certainly not filing until at least the 5 year mark.  But I personally am tired of proving my relationship to the US government.  Lol.

Same here. That why I waited until way past the 5 years...

months for the 5 year rule.  I read up on it after you suggested it “going through”and it is so much easier on the 5 year rule.

 

I am lucky I have never been question about my marriage we have been married for 16 years so there should be nothing to question lol.
