We're at a loss for words. 

And as people who wrangle words on a minute-by-minute basis, that doesn't happen often.

What happens even less — hopefully never again — is a Montana candidate assaulting a reporter. While there are still questions left unanswered about GOP House hopeful Greg Gianforte's altercation with Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs, eyewitness accounts, law enforcement investigations and records are all shocking, disturbing and without precedent.

 

That's why The Billings Gazette editorial board is also doing something without precedent: We're rescinding our editorial endorsement of Greg Gianforte.

Although we're greatly troubled by this action against a member of the media who was just doing his job, to make this an issue of media intrusion or even a passionate defense of the role of a free press during an election would be to miss the point.

If what was heard on tape and described by eye-witnesses is accurate, the incident in Bozeman is nothing short of assault. We wouldn't condone it if it happened on the street. We wouldn't condone it if it happened in a home or even a late-night bar fight. And we couldn't accept it from a man who is running to become Montana's lone Congressional representative.

 

Yes, everyone follows the newspaper's political endorsements.

Are we really that surprised that the Republican will probably still win? We've got a fraction of Trump supporters who support any Republican candidate even if they committed murder in the middle of the street.

It's really worrying that this is starting to be accepted as the new Norm. Freedom of press is one of the most important values we hold this country because without it there can be no democracy.

If a few billionaire conservatives bought up the the biggest news outlets in the US and pumped out one sided news you wouldn't be loving freedom of the press. The US has a biased press, a more balanced one would be better.

i don't think there's a more influential person with a more widespread platform than trump, and we all know how he feels about the press.

Unlike the MDL, I don't take my marching orders from some leader. I can think for myself.  I doubt this guy said, 'hey, this is Trump's America, I can assault a reporter today'.  We have no idea of the entire backstory here or how this reporter may have acted in the days leading up to this.  I am not excusing Gianforte's actions, and if the investigators deem an assault prosecution is in order, so be it.  If he actually wins, we will see how the GOP treats this.  I would be all for them forcing a replacement.

backstory? i don't need a backstory. adults who enter into politics need to be able to handle the media, it is an integral part of government service. seriously, this guy gets not a single pass from me. do you know how many kids in highschool would have their lives completely derailed for assaulting a fellow student in such a manner? possibly charged as an adult, felony charge on their record for life? adults don't get to just bodyslam folks for doing their job, people in public service are no exception. good gawd, i can't believe you actually said 'how this reporter may have acted in the days leading up to this" you are excusing gianforte's actions, that is exactly what you're doing.
