Hi guys,

I just recently joined to this group and I couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

I am F1 student, currently in OPT period, and got married to US citizen on May 1. I wanted to change my last name to my husband's last name. I already changed the last name in DMV, Social Security Office, and my university. Social Security office said I might have the problem getting new name because my last name in immigration record is not my husband last name. So I went to my school and updated my new last name in school system. I also asked the international student consular from my university and she told me that I need to change my name in passport first in order to update the sevis and immigration record. I have no idea how to change my name on passport and I'm also not sure if it's really necessary to change my name in passport. Please help me if you know anything about it. Thank you so much .

Did you file AOS? When you adjust status to permanent resident based on your marriage to a USC, you will fill out those forms with your new name and supply a copy of your marriage certificate to USCIS. You will then get your green card (and EAD/AP if you file those as well) in your new married name and it will be updated with immigration.

If you want to change it in your passport you'll need to supply the necessary documents to your home country for making a marriage based name change and then get a new passport.

I haven't filed AOS yet. But I am working on it and hopefully I can get it all done by next week. The problem I am worried is not getting the Social Security Card with new name since the person assisted me told me that I might not get the name changed because I haven't updated my husband last name yet in immigration record. Also my husband has bank account with USAA and it is required to submit the copy of my Social Security card with my updated last name. So I couldn't give it to them until I get new social security card with new last name. Since I don't have the proof of having properties or bank account together, I couldn't submit all the documents I need to do AOS yet. :/ Thank you very much for taking time and replying me though. I really appreciate it.

It's okay to have everything in your maiden name and change it when you get your EAD/AP card, which is a primary ID document. The bank will accept this as well.

You don't need to send evidence of relationship with the AOS application. You would bring it to the interview. Don't make it harder for you than it is. :)

Just put your maiden name on the bank account for now - I did this, most do. Changed it with EAD/AP.
