Steven, Wind power kills millions of birds every day. I can't live with that guilt. I'll keep smashing atoms thank you.

They kill cows too. :crying:

Wind power and bird mortality...

To help our understanding of turbine hazards to birds we'd like to make an analogy, to your bicycle. Turn your bike upside down or put it in a work rack, set it to the highest gear...the one you use to go fast on a level slope.... and now move the wheel slowly with your hand. The chain moves rapidly with only a few degrees of wheel rotation. This symbolizes today's cutting edge 1.5 mW turbines, which have a very large surface area of blade exposed to the wind and a gearbox that turns the dynamo quickly while the blades move slowly. Birds dodge these slow moving blades relatively easily.

Now put the bike in the lowest gear...the one you use to climb hills...and move the wheel with your hand fast enough to turn the chain as fast as before. That symbolizes the 20-year-old "bird-o-matic" wind turbine design. Small blades with small surface areas have to turn rapidly to overcome the magnetic force of the dynamos, which generate electricity.

Recapping: small blades, low surface area, lots of dead birds possible; very big blades, with large surface area exposed to wind, very few dead birds.

High capacity turbines are a relatively recent commercial product. Consequently, any field study of "avian mortality" done on a wind farm constructed prior to approximately the year 2000 (maybe a bit later in the US) is inappropriate for estimating bird mortality based on modern turbine designs.

Relax Steven :) I want to build a clean mix of power generation. Wind, solar, nuclear, hydro (river and ocean) etc....

The real inconvenient truth is that people want/need a huge amount of power but don't want to pay for any new sources. No one wants a new solar/nuclear/hydro/coal/wind plant in their neighborhood. Look at the liberal elite in Massachusetts. They don't want wind turbines in the ocean because it would ruin the view. OH SHAME!!!!

what happens is once in a while one of the blades flings loose. Cows are frequently put out there to graze. so ole betsy could just be standing there chewing on her cud(is that correct?) when whap! a wind mill blade goes slicing through.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Too funny, LS

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I was going to say that TXU already has a nuclear plant at Commanche Peak . . . but those other comments about Texas are quite entertaining, hehe!!!

We could say something about all the hot air down at Crawford could power up several of those energy generating windmills/turbines or whatever!! :innocent:

PS. TXU has cause me to have the most horrendously high electric bills every this year.

PPS. France has had nuclear energy for many years now and they have very little pollution PLUS they get to sell energy to their other EU natives. There was a report on TV a couple of days ago.

Two things strike me as odd

(i) with the vast amounts of coast, interior plains, and sunshine why are wind and solar power more utilised ..... UK is set to meet 10% wind generated electricity by 2010 and doubling that by 2020 if a country with so little spare land and a really busy coastline can manage that why not here ( we wont mention UK and solar power!!)

(ii) why is it ok to tell the rest of the world no you can't have nuclear this that and the other when its ok for them to plough on with whatever they deem fit power or weapons wise ?

just befuddled here

This only seems to muddy the waters further it would appear that the signatories to the NPT have broken it as many times as those we seek to chatise

I find it very hard to accept that you can threaten someone (ie the USA threatening Iran, or any other axis of evil country) and expect it to comply when it is faced with a "I'm threatening you with a loaded gun but you can only have a water pistol" mentality
