What about the couples that are buying their first home together, to be told no by the mortgage company because they won't accept an extension letter and demand a 10yr green card?

What about the people who are applying for a dream new job and despite seeing the extension letter, the employer won't accept an expired green card?

What about the people that get delayed at foreign airports because the airline check-in staff are not familiar with the extension letter and miss their flight and connecting flight?

What about the people that needlessly speed hours in secondary immigration inspection, to be finally given a grunt and told to go on their way?

What about the people that have to travel for hours and hours to get an I-551 extension stamp in their passport, only to be told they have arrived a week too early?

What about the people that spend hours in the DMV and then get turned away because that office is unfamiliar with the extension letter?

What about the people who's naturalization applications are delayed because USCIS haven't adjudicated their ROC applications in a timely manner?

What about expecting a reasonable and somewhat timely service from USCIS given the fact that you've paid $680 in fees?

You're right. It's certainly not a mountain of problems, but it's certainly not a molehill either.

I am really sorry but what has all above mentioned by you has to do to my Post?

Anybody who does not know anything about extension letter need to be explained by us what it is(mainly airlines people)

You wrote some other problems that have absolutely nothing to do with this thread

Actually, you're right - I went off on a rant, didn't I. Apologies.

I think nine months into the waiting game, I'm getting a little bit sensitive to any of the 'sit back, relax' type replies. Gawd knows what I'll be like when I've waited as long as some of the longest-waiters on here.

Apologies again and have a nice day!

There are several posts here on the subject on int'l travel during ROC. Contact each embassy because each have differing criteria. Some nations accept the extension letter as valid, others (like Miexico/Costa Rica) do not.

EDIT.. we are deferring international travel during ROC (not the least because we had a name change); passport and conditional PRcard have different names.

Hi Guys,

I've been trawling through this thread for an answer to my question, if I've missed something I do apologise. I've just booked flights from ATL-LHR over the Christmas period, and I'll have my expired GC and extension letter in hand. My question relates to the airline's request for GC details.

I filed for removal of conditions and received my letter in July (for a September GC expiration). Under "Green Card expiry date" on the airline's page, should I put the date on my physical GC (that's expired) or the one year extension date on the letter?

Any answers would be gratefully received!

I entered the green card expiry date, plus one year, into the airline reservation system.

1. I will travel out of the US through JFK next month, what do i expect when coming back, do they gonna sent me to secondary and check all my belonging before they let me in?

2. Do i need a stamp on my passport on top of my Extension letter ?

Thank you.

Hi guys! Can you please advise me.

Im a December 2016 roc filler, so probably I have a few months of waiting down the road to hear back from USICS. I wanted to travel now, while I still have a valid extention letter ( did it twice before with a little to no hussle) however it's close to its expiration date. Thank you for your informative information, now I know that my status extention is until the expiration date of my green card, not letter itself. However as others have mentioned, even USICS and CBP sometimes uncertain about when the extention ends.

Do you guys think I will be ok traveling now or it better to wait it out and get it stamp instead?

Travel plans: 19 Nov - 1 December

extention letter date: 12 December

green card expiration date: 27 January

please se let me know what you think? I'm trying to buy plane tickets asap but a little worry that the travel is close to expiration date (s)?

Thamk you

Hi, I travelled on extention letter twice, first time got admitted without secondary inspection, second time I did got sent to secondary and it took about 15 mins. So you might be asked to wait until they check your file, maybe ask you some questions, so plan timing accordingly. Also this thread and others on that subject were really helpful and people shared their experiences as well

I think as i remember from other threads and some lawyers websites , you can use your GC to travel until the last day of the expiration date . hope this will help.

Guys! I have a question, can some clarify my concern? I will be traveling back to us with my USC toddler ( who also has disability) after expiration of extension letter. I haven't got a stamp I-551 because I left US earlier this year. But my GC is valid till January according to latest clarification on extending conditional residence, will I for sure be denied entry because I don't have a stamp and letter expired or there's some luck I'll be allowed to enter? Can they put a stamp and the passport control? ( i assume they can since that's where I got it when entered states on cr1 visa).

Basically, does expired letter cancel the validity of GC?

In theory, expired letter does not cancel the validity of the GC, but would have been wise to get the i551 stamp if your itinerary had called for routine travel outside the US past i797 expiration. Bigger issue may be airline staff not letting you board a US-bound flight. Also, if returning after more than 6 mos overseas, expect to be possibly grilled at POE.

They wouldn't give stamp if its more than one month before expiration, and I left Couple months after I got my letter for family reasons. Last time I was absent for 9 months and didn't have issues at the POE, just general questions why so long.

Based on page 38 in this document that Derwood provided, it's clearly outlines that expiration date of the letter does not matter in determination of extention. It's 1 year from the date on GC. I would def print out that page in case of any questions during the trip. Try not to stress out over it!
