I am wondering if I can start right away with college once I arrive on my K1 visa. If so, I could start in september, but if we have to marry first and apply for the green card I won't make it for this semester. I guess it depends on the school since this is a community college but in general would they accept me with my K1 status?

Thank you

Why not complete all your legal documents first(ssn#, state id, gc..) after getting married. With the current administration, schools are most likely taking all proper legal documents before letting you enrolled. When I enrolled for classes in community college they have asked me for valid id. Don't be in rush, take your time ☺☺

Dag!

My wife managed to enroll in university in August, which was 7-8 months after her arrival.

She needed a social security number. I can't really remember much else, but you should find out application deadlines. Community college deadlines may not be early, but why don't you try contacting their admissions offices?

You may know this by now.

Good luck!

Hi thank you for letting me know but the community college I will go to, I can enroll with the visa, so I was right it all depends on the school. Technically it is legal to study, unfortunately it's too late for me to reach the fall semester deadline :D Ohwell I will have more time to adjust to the country and prepare everything.

Hi!

When do you expect to be arriving?

Oh... I see that you are waiting for your interview, right?

Yes, you may miss the fall semester, but you can always enroll in the Spring :)

I don't know yet but it's estimated for mid September-start of October. Hopefully around mid July they will receive our documents from the NVC :) At the Amsterdam consulate you can't schedule the interview yourself. Some got their interview date 2 months after sending back packet 3 to the consulate for example, and I think the same will happen to me. I heard from fellow Dutch people that it depends on the medical exam (which is fully booked in july already since 2 weeks ago). There is only one doctor that can do it for you. How does all of this go in Germany?

Mfg

Hi,

I arrived in the US Feb 2016 with K1 Visa, and quickly enrolled to community college when I arrived.

They accepted me as International student, and then I adjusted my student status in Feb 2017 even though I got my GC and SSN in June 2016. In Texas, to change status from international student to "in county" student need to stay in the same city (in my case Dallas) for at least 12 months.

Financial wise, I would suggest to wait until your documents done (green card, SSN and driver license), because international student cost 3 - 5 times higher than local student and you will have to pass some US college ready test.

But again, its depend on you, whether you can wait or not and if financially ready to bear the higher cost.

Now I am a local student and this is my second year in community college. Excited to move to University next year. Being local student we got cheaper tuition and can apply for financial aid if needed.

Good luck with your journey.

Those are my thoughts as well.  Community colleges generally have a much lower tuition rate for individuals living in their districts.  I know my wife went to the local community college about 10 months after her arrival, so she already had her GC by then, and the tuition was much lower.

Good Luck!

We were allowed to apply for in-state tuition based on the fact that she had to join me here, and had no choice.

She was able to get a social security number pretty quickly after her arrival, but she wasn't able to change her status to domestic until after receipt of the GC.
