Yes a drug test is performed.  He will likely incur a 1 year ban.

I think whether a drug test is performed may depend on where you are. I had my urine tested for gonnorhea and my blood tested for syphillis, at no point was I informed of or did I consent to a drug test. I am in Canada. I was able to go on the website of the office that did my medical to find out what tests were going to be done, see if the place providing the medical has a website that tells you what will be done. I was asked about drug/alcohol history and said no (honestly, I rarely drink and I don't do drugs). If he can confirm he will be tested via a urine sample, there may be places he can get fake stuff if it's too late to stop. I know it's fairly easy to find in the US, he will just have to look around. Otherwise, he should not do marijuana at least two weeks prior to the medical (if he uses regularly, he might want to consider being clean for 4-6 weeks to ensure a negative sample and provide peace of mind).

The individual going to the medical is asked if they do drugs and must answer yes to that question, if the answer is yes, would more than likely be a denial on top of the positive drug test (it's the blood test and urine test). Even if the individual is clean for the drug test, the fact that they must admit if they have or have not done drugs.. will be an issue.

I just looked at the I-693 form (the one for the medical check that gets sent out to the embassy), and it specifically only asks about drug addiction or abuse. I never said anything about my fiancé being addicted to or abusing drugs.

 

But anyway, we haven't filed our application yet so I'll just tell my fiancé to quit for now to be on the safe side. Even if the physician or whoever asks if my fiancé used drugs, and my fiancé says no (while testing negative)... so what? They have a lie detector test in the medical exam? Lol come on now...

Thanks for the info... Glad to know I'm not the only one with this inquiry... I haven't looked at that form yet, but I wouldn't encourage lying if I were you...

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I was thinking the exact same thing. I know that I never participated in a drug test because they can't test you for something without your consent, but to be on the safe side I understand why people would quit. So many people participate in marijuana use around the world without it classifying as abuse or addiction, so I don't think saying no to this question would be the biggest deal. I definitely did not see a lie detector! Lol. (I don't participate in that stuff though so it was never an issue for me, however I know quite a few people who do). 

 

There are a lot of lies that would be bad to tell, like getting married just for a green card, I think that not saying you smoke pot on occasion isn't the worst one. I can guarantee that a lot of people who entered the US on a K1 do it or have done it and never mentioned it at the medical.

If you want to lie to an official that is asking a question on behalf of the US government, be my guest. A search of this forum will provide answers to what happens to people who lie and also what happens to people who want to be honest admit that they have used drugs in the past - any drugs recreationally, occasionally, or otherwise. The US government doesn't care if you do it once in a blue moon, once in your life as a kid and you're now middle-aged, or constantly. Do it once, at any time, for any reason, and it's a problem. Smoking pot is still a federal crime. It doesn't matter how we personally feel on the subject.

They only do blood and urine tests. It wouldn't be a hair sample.

 

If they are doing a drug test they have to inform you it's being done, I never had a drug test. I was tested for sypillis (blood) and gonorrhea (urine). They do have a questionnaire that asks if you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse. That's the only mention of drugs I experienced at the medical. You can probably look online or call the medical center you'll be going to and ask what tests will be done using what methods - the one I went to lists on their website what I did at my medical.
