Obviously these forums aren't a place to have a well thought out, calm and intelligent conversation or debate, but the issue of making it illegal is bound to bring up the issue of circumcision. That is a form of genital mutilation that has enough support from large communities that it is deemed appropriate.

I personally disagree with female genital mutilation but agree with circumcision by parent's choice. However I have to admit those two things are a bit contradictory. Making a law banning one but not the other would make the legal system contradict itself in this case, which may be complicated.

Of course instead I should resort to some witty joke or insult or something. I can't think of anything at the moment. Please someone tell me how I'm being a crazy liberal or something.

but, doesn't fgm make orgasm close to if not completely impossible? circumcision doesn't do that.

Hence my point of asking if he was a medical doctor. The two are very very different  things.

why didn't the op give some sort of fact based evidence that this occurs on the regular in the us? i would think that making it illegal would be redundant since it should be considered child abuse.

The primary reasons for FGM:

- Control over a woman

- Remove the pleasure of clitoral stimulation (its not the only type but its considered primary) from females, whether by foreskin removal or complete clitorectomy

- Other religious reasons

The perpetrators are primarily religious in nature, but more than anyone else, Muslims in the US perform this. And with the desire by the left to bring in countless more Muslims from regions where, despite laws, it's perfectly acceptable (because women don't have rights) to perform this, it would only get worse.

Just ban it. Muslims and other religious nuts will protest, but who cares.

Yes I am a doctor. Yes I have performed circumcisions myself (though not often).

I did not say they are the exact same thing. The symptoms from FGM are far more severe. However on paper they are both a form of surgical manipulation of the genitalia. Whether you call it "mutilation" or not is a matter of opinion, history and social convention. Circumcision does "mutililate" the genitalia. It just happens to be a very well tolerated form a mutilation.

As I said I support one but not the other. However there are people who argue that if one should be banned, the other should as well. I'm not a lawyer but I imagine it would create a difficult situation. I would actually completely support banning FGM and leaving circumcision. But that is something I have decided DESPITE recognizing that it is slightly (not completely) incongruous. I think a law that is slightly incongruous is a little bit different than individual medical opinion.

This reminds me of another thread. Things aren't black and white. There are nuances to everything. People here tend to oversimplify everything.

i was trying to discuss it, because i don't think the two are comparable.

don't you think banning fgm in this country is a given, since we don't allow child abuse?
