FAILURE TO REGISTER FOR SELECTIVE SERVICE

Hello Folks,

 

I am about to apply for US citizenship and after checking the checklist I found that all males who got to the US between the ages 18-25 must register for the Selective Service. I was not aware of that rule and I turned 26 2 months ago. What should I do?

  Wait until 5 years after the oldest date you could have registered.  If you apply now you are apt to be denied for lack of good moral character

I agree with the above. 

 

I've seen one person--one--be able to naturalise successfully before they turned 31 but failed to register for SS. They did this by bringing a ton of evidence (I think from their pastor, volunteer coordinators, and others) that overcame the moral character failure that not registering for SS normally brings. 

 

Their post is on these forums somewhere. 

 

Unless you have something like that tucked in your pocket, wait until you turn 31 and then apply. Your lack of SS registration is then no longer held against you.

I actually checked on SSS.gov and I found by entering my details that USCIS has already registered me within less than a month of my arrival to the US and I was able to print out a Proof of Registration.

Problem solved then. 

 

There is mention that USCIS may automatically register you on the final page of the I-485.
