Hi guys,

I am going to the US in March to 'activate' my permanent residency and I have some questions:

1. I do not have a permanent address in the US and I have put down the address of a hotel as a placeholder. In my interview at the embassy the employee did not have any concerns, however said I could send it to a family friend or someone I know and to give this address at the POE. I have some distanced friends that would be reliable in receiving my GC and then sending it to me in Australia, but I want to know if the address I provide at the POE will be noted as my permanent address as I will not be living there. I don't intend on getting an address until I move there later this year.

2. Can I get my Social Security sent to the same address or do I have to have a permanent address where I have to be living?

3. I will be in the US for a week to scout places to live and then will be in Canada and eventually returning home for five months to save up some more to move. Is this normal to tell the border agent?

Thanks for any help in advance!

1) You'll need a physical address for them to send the GC to. A hotel is not a good idea. Yoir friends address should be fine. It will be noted as your address of residence, since you (upon entry) is a permanent resident (and thus need a permanent address).

Don't have your friends mail the GC to you (the consequences of it being lost in the mail is not something you want to risk), just use the temporary GC in your passport to re-enter.

2) Yes, use the same address. But they will assume that it is your current residence.

3) Only if specifically asked, which is unusual.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

Thanks for your quick reply! I guess my concern is that I will not be going to the address where I will have everything sent, and therefore will need everything forwarded to me. Also, can this address be a business address? That way I can get an admin person to accept the package when it arrives so I know it isn't going to be left anywhere.

An extra question - will I have to visit the Social Security Administration office when I arrive? Or will everything be sent through automatically?

It should be a private address.

I believe you can check some box to have the SS card sent out automatically (I was a K1, so I don't know exactly), but sometimes it doesn't come through and many/some end up having to go to the SSA anyways.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

We got our green cards sent to us by courier from the person who received them, partly to preempt some problems people have had with airlines understanding the temporary green cards and having problems flying. I would never send them regular mail from the US ....

and yes it will be marked as your "permanent address" but so what, as long as someone you know is there, when you move to the US properly you'll update your address with uscis with your real new address.

The address will be used automatically for both the SS and green cards. Nothing else will be sent there, at least not until your next interaction with uscis, which presumably will be when you want citizenship and by then you'll have your own place.
