I just came home from the place you get a driving license from since my husband needed to renew his and was shocked that I'll basically need to take the complete exam like I've never driven before. This means written exam plus driving test. I also checked online before and to me it seems fairly discriminatory that they accept German license, French license ,etc...but they don't accept mine, Slovenian, which is exactly the same as German - maybe even harder to obtain. I would imagine that inside EU all the licenses are equal, which means they can't discriminate..it would be the same as if they said in my country ..oh we accept only licenses from NY, California and Montana...everyone else need to take the whole examination like you've never ever had a driving license before.

Anyways...

Does anyone have experience about getting driving license recognized here?

Can someone tell me what their written driving test is or how it looks like, how hard it is and where do you study from before you take it if you don't go to take those silly classes AGAIN?

What about the driving test? What does it contain? I know it may be different from State to State (I'm in Texas), but there sure is a common idea of what do you need to do?

Thank you,

Hi there,

This is fairly standard in most states. The reality is that you do get some preferential treatment because you already know how to drive. Yes some countries that have deals with specific states can go completely around any regulation, but keep in mind that you will get to also jump through some steps.

The eye test is simple, and the written test is also simple and takes all of a few minutes to complete. You get a booklet to study (in our state they've turned it into a short glossy magazine for the kids to pay attention to.. which is nothing like the thick book of old days). You already know how to drive, so as long as you brush up on the particulars it should be simple. You'll then take a driving test, which is also pretty simple considering you already know how to drive. Remember you aren't starting off as a new driver (as long as you aren't under a very young age where additional regulations may fall into play) because you already know how to operate a vehicle. New drivers often require hours and hours of classroom and street time before they are given restricted licenses. It sounds like you'll be bypassing that, which is the same for this state. Assuming you have your SSN and EAD (don't bother to trying if you don't have these two things yet), they will issue your license up until the expiration of your EAD. Go back into your DMV once you get your green card, and it may be upgraded to a full one. It doesn't sound like you'll need to sit through any additional classes as some states do - my husband was required to take a three hour lecture on drunk/drugged driving at all costs paid by him too in addition to the written/road tests. Still dealing with the DMV was fairly straightforward, so long as you encounter employees that know what they are doing.

Thanks for the info. It makes me feel a bit better, but still, I hate exams of any kind..specially practical driving for through past 12 years I had my license, never had an accident, never was even pulled over with being on the road for like several hours out of a day for about 3 years... I worry they will complicate things like they do in my country. I remember pretty well how traumatic that experience was and sure hope this is not it. So Working permit is EAD?

If anyone has the links to the materials for driving license I'd be eternally grateful. :)

Thank you,

Thank you Dee Elle,

this is very kind of you. <3

Have a wonderful day....and when I'll finally go about taking these tests (written and practical), I'll write here all about it for I know I'm not the only one being frustrated and shocked by this.

Hey Kristina, any luck with the driving test? I'm also annoyed that I have to take the driving test having driven for 18 years. First hand experience with how easy the test is will be much appreciated ( I am also not fond of tests).

Hi Marc,

I haven't taken it due to some medical issues, but sooner or later I'll need to. As soon as I go about doing it, I'll let you know...I hope to do it soon for just the thought of the exam makes me anxious. I've been driving for about 13 years and now doing it again...I truly hope it's not a big deal and won't have problems with it.

You're basically my neighbor. I'm in FW area..southwest-ish of it. Tell me what does the writting one looks like and how much does it cost? How long did it take to do it?

I think I did it in like 10 minutes for 30 questions, most of them are really common sense questions. I got one answer wrong. It's helpful to know the penalty for DUI and stuff, what's the fine, length of incarceration etc. It's $25 for both the writing and the driving tests, you get three attempts each.

Hey Kristina, I passed the driving test! Several things that she pointed out that I didn't do that she deducted points for.

1. Not stopping long enough at the stop sign.

2. Didnt put on the signal when I do the parallel parking.

3. Too close to the curb for my parallel parking.

4. Not stick to my lane while driving.

that's about it. Good luck with yours!

Thank you. I just got scheduled tomorrow morning to take the writing test. So I'll be reading through that little booklet of 60 pages or so...and hopefully they schedule the driving test for monday so I can practice parking for I'm not used to driving my husband's truck (I actually dislike big cars)...I'm getting a small one and a manual...I'm not fond of automatic.

Anyways...how long did the practical driving take place? Did you drive in downtown? Did she take you to the highway? What all kind of parking did you need to do? Anything else unique you needed to do?

Thanks
