Adjustment of Status...Visa Number

Hello.

We are preparing to file Noom's AOS application and a small problem has popped up.

For the life of me I cannot read the visa number on his visa. The Embassy typed the K-1 Expiration date over part of the Visa number. I've contacted the Embassy for assistance, but the reply I received was that the visa numbers are randomly assigned and the embassy does not have a record of the visa number. I find that hard to believe, but that was the response.

So for those of you who have recently been through the process...how many characters are typically in the visa number? Is it preceded by a letter? Does the visa number contain letters? or just numbers?

And if we submit the paperwork with an incorrect visa number, what's the worst thing that could happen?

You can find it on your noa2 on above the expiration date.

If you for an RFE its on there as well.

That's the alien number.

The Visa number is in the passport in red next to your name

Yup as above. Not sure if it varies by embassy(assuming not) but Zian's K-1 started with a letter then 7 numbers.

Noom's visa number is completely typed over (except for the last 3 numbers) with the K-1 petition expiration date! I can see numbers under it but can't make them out clearly. So very frustrating. And the visa number doesn't show up anywhere else. You would think it would be on the I-94, but it isn't.

Yea I think the I94 only shows passport number and the visa used to enter/entry date and 90 day date. It's pretty basic really.

I suppose you have to keep harassing the embassy until you can get a straight answer from them. The whole "it's randomly generated and we don't keep records" doesn't make sense, they have a record somewhere, they have to.

And you aren't only one the I bet who has had this kind of issue. Immigration officer in Dallas actually wrote in pen on Zian's K-1 visa. Mostly just circling a couple times the fact it was a 1-time entry visa just to make sure he remembered it. So I bet others have come across same thing.

After reading your post, I had to look at Takky's and they did the very same thing to hers. The K1 Expiration date is typed over the Visa number as well. Ugh

Hmm, so would it be good advice to have my fiancee take a picture of her visa BEFORE she enters the US to avoid this pitfall? I'm worried she'll succumb to the same fate.

No, that will not help. When she receives the visa the printing will already have been done; it isn't entering the US that modifies the visa. Maybe your fiancee can call the embassy as soon as she receives the visa and will have better luck. In our case a lot of time had lapsed already so maybe that's why the response was indifferent.

I'm not sure why the embassy is allowed to print over the visa number. Maybe it isn't a big deal. When we submit the AOS application to Homeland Security they will be able to see for themselves what the issue is. Let them figure it out. We're doing our best!

Yikes! So you're saying the embassy alters the visa? That's nuts. I'll take your advice and contact the embassy as soon as the visa is issued to hopefully have her visa number. It sounds like the embassy does this to every K1, which seems odd. I'm already gearing up for our AOS journey and it looks like so much FUN!

incredible, isn't it? but your fiancee's is much easier to read than Noom's was! congratulations on the visa.

Agreed. I guess it doesn't really matter as long as you send in a copy of the visa. Just let USCIS and the embassy duke it out over that one. Thank you for the well-wishes. My fiancee arrives just over 1 week from today!
