SSN Name Change Before or After Filing AOS

Hi, been a long time!

I was reluctant to ask but there's so much conflicting information around this but I need a definitive answer or opinion.

So my SSN finally came through after problems with them verifying my details but of course it's in my maiden name and I have since gotten married. I was told to wait for an answer on the SSN before applying for AOS in case of duplicate numbers. I have been sat waiting and now that I have it it's obviously wrong because I have taken my husband's name. Do I wait until my AOS is through or should I go ahead and change my name at the local SSA in the meantime?

I'm unclear what to do and your help would be very much appreciated.

I will not look back on this journey with fond memories, but I will look back knowing that every step was worth it, whatever the outcome.

We encountered the best results by following the VJ K1 Visa Flowchart: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1flow

Another consistent source of SSN information can be found in the pinned thread located in the SSN Forum: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/513513-recommended-update-information-for-ssn-application/

YMMV

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Assuming you submitted your AOS in your married name, wait until you get either the EAD or GC with your married name on it, then go back to SSA and get your new SS card with your married name on it.

Agree with Lainie B, don't waste the time and hassle with the SSA right now. Concentrate on getting through the AOS and when you receive either your EAD/AP or GC in your married name you can get the SSC name changed. I suggest waiting for the GC that way you get a new SSC without the pesky DHS note. We changed Katya's name when we got her EAD with her new married name, but it was really a wasted trip as the GC came about 2 months later. Luckily for us the closest SSA office was only about 20 miles away.

Good Luck!

This is what I'm doing.

Once I have my EAD I will go back and change my name. Can be done with marriage certificate though but I have to go back and get my boys SSN when EAD get here so I'll just do it at once and then I'll have the new SSN card with name change for the DL.

Thank you everyone for your advice, as long as I have the SSN then I guess that's all that matters for now. DL was one of the things I was hoping to do asap but like everything else, it can wait. I'll do the name change thing after the AOS and just worry about getting this mailed off today.

Much appreciated (F)

You can do the DL in your maiden name as well, but it will only be valid for the length of the I94. We did that with Katya as she needed a learners permit so we felt it was worth the two months or so of practice. We waited for the GC then finished up her DL in her married name which is valid for 2 years. We could have done it with the EAD, but it would have only had a one year validity.

Good Luck!

Ooh, good idea. That's perfect, I'll let the other half know and in the meantime we can get the ball rolling on that! Thank you.
