Eviction Day Arrives for Ankeny Chickens

Six hens ran across Tom Smolik's backyard this week looking for bugs and seeds in the grass. His children ran along with them, stretching out their arms, trying to catch the birds.

It's a scene that Smolik will miss.

Saturday was eviction day at the Ankeny home. The city says the chickens must go. They are not allowed in the growing suburban community.

Rules governing the keeping of chickens vary widely throughout the Des Moines metro. Cities like Urbandale and Waukee ban the birds entirely, whereas Des Moines, the most densely populated city in the metro, allows up to 30 birds if residents can meet setback and upkeep requirements.

Smolik lives in one of the four cities where chickens are banned outright. He'll pack up the birds this weekend and take them to live in Winterset, where chickens are allowed in residential neighborhoods.

"It just felt like an invasion of privacy," Smolik, 30, said. "They don't make noise, they don't smell. The only sound you'll hear is the yippy dogs in other people's backyards."

Depends. Being in the rural area I live in, but still residential area.. people keep chickens and roosters everywhere (contrary to the law) and do not care as to where they go roaming off to. The question to me is, how are they kept? Are they kept safely and securely with no threat to the bird or a neighbor's pets or property? Personally, when a neighbor decides to let their chickens free roam to trespass through my yard, harass my pets, trample and eat my gardens.. it gets kind of annoyingly disrespectful you know?

We must incarcerate all chickens, preemptively, and deport them to their coops of origin.

Seriously, roosters are altogether another matter.

In Ecuador, the three largest population groups are as follows:

1. Roosters

2. Dogs

3. Human beings

There is even an extremely vocal rooster in downtown Quito, the capital city.

He can be clearly heard from the Umpteenth floor of a major tourist hotel.

After (and during) visits to Ecu, I vow that if I had one wish, it would be to neutralize a million roosters.
