it varies depending if the process is completed at msc or whether it gets sent to your local office... I just got my notification for AOS green card interview 4th August and i applied Sept 28th last year. Look up your local office processing times. Although we were taken by surprised because it said they were only processing cases received in june last year (Denver is my local office). Denver is very slow but the time frame varies greatly. As far as travel to the uk i would apply for the I- 131 document (advance parole) which allows you to travel...

~ Moved from "K-1 Finance(e) Visa Process & Procedures" to "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" as OP's question is about this stage of the process ~

Organizer hat off:

When you file for AOS you should file for Advance Parole (AP) and Employment Authorization Document (EAD). You usually receive the AP/EAD combo card within 90 days of filing. Once you have this you'll be able to leave the US & come back. Do not leave without AP.

Thanks to all for replying.

So, the process is once you get married then you apply for adjustment of status. During that we should apply for Advance Parole? How will I know where AOS will be processed? My local office is Chicago, so no clue what the times are for the interview?

The advance parole would be needed for terminally ill family member. So, do you have to apply again for employment authorization once you receive your green card? Or do you only have to do it one time right after you get married?

This is all very confusing. Where is the best place to find information on these topics?? Thank you!!

Hi There,

you apply for the Advance parole , EAD (WORK AUTHORIZATION document) and aos at the same time. As far as knowing how fast your local office is processing AOS go to the uscis homepage , search processing times and enter your location in the drop box. the page will open and you can see the processing times for each application. EAD normally takes 60-90 days.

Hi there,

You marry (make sure you have a copy of your marriage certificate in hand) and then apply for AOS. One check for $1070. At the same time you file for AOS, you include the application for Advanced Parole and Employment Authorization and the required documents needed for each application. The unique fees for these two extra forms are waived if you include it with your adjustment package and pay the single fee as mentioned above. The guides here show you how to do it and what to send in.

You cannot travel until you have the advanced parole/EAD combo card in hand. Usually this will arrive after completing a short biometrics appointment and up to 90 day wait. If it is an emergency requiring travel you can apply for an emergency advanced parole and obtain it sooner. You would most likely require an NOA1, and then make an INFOPASS appointment at your local office to obtain it in an emergency situation.

The Chicago office is not your local office, it's a short stop where they will send it off to the location required: either to the National Benefit Center, your local town office in Florida, or in some cases you may be waived for an interview and your case may be sent to a different office entirely.

Your AP/EAD combo card once received is good for a year and can be renewed, should for some strange reason you not have your green card yet. Once you have your green card (may take 6+ months), this takes the place of any travel/work document.

AOS (I-485) gets you a greencard that allows you to do anything, but takes 6 months or more to get. Time varies just like everything else in immigration

EAD (I-765) application gets you work authorization. 60-90 days so faster than waiting on greencard

AP (I-131) travel authorization while you are waiting on the greencard. 60-90 days to approval. K1s don't need any special reason. Use it to visit Mum.

Mail the three applications together. Pay the AOS fee and the other two are free when they are submitted as part of your AOS package. Buy 1 Get 2 free.
