We were in the same boat here in New York. Call the DMV every morning to see if there is a cancellation. We got in with a cancellation - otherwise we would have had to wait six weeks!

We'd already bought a car (private sale) about an hour away from us. Until she got her license, we couldn't go get the car!

Good luck. There will always be cancellations. Just be ready for them!

As per my exp when I was visiting on B1/B2 last time to San Jose Cali. I was stopped for overspeeding on I 280 route to SFO.

I was clearly told by officer that my indian state license is only valid for first 6 months of my visit to the US

after that I either require an International Drivers License or the License as per California State to drive legally

Therefore concerning your situation of MIL driving on her countries license I would say drive down to DMV local office for information.

Usually they provide you handbook which also has the same rule mentioned and you can request a copy

your MIL should keep that copy in car while driving

I was recently at the DMV in Pennsylvania and asked this very question. I was told that even tho I would hold a learners permit I could still drive on my Australian licence (for one year from arrival into the US or until my Australian licence expired, which ever came first) until I got my full US licence.

Now this could be different from state to state so I would call and ask if she can continue to use her Slovenia licence.

That's wrong. International driver's licenses can be used for one year if you're a non-resident. Once you're a resident of a state, you can use the international driver's license for a few months at most. According to Pennsylvania law, once you're a state resident, you must take a Pennsylvania driver's license within 60 days, as stated on Pennsylvania DMV's website.

If you want correct information, don't call, get the info from the website instead. Calling means talking to someone who may or may not know what they're talking about. Information posted on a government website has been cleared by lawyers and people involved in policy and procedures.
