Hi Everyone,

I will be moving to the USA on a K1 visa on June 23rd and will go on my soon to be wife's health insurance once we get married in July.

I have Crohn's so I don't want to have a period where I'm not covered by any form of paid healthcare.

I understand travel insurance would not apply to this period, so could anyone recommend any providers of relevant temporary insurances and in particular one which may provide cheaper insurance for those with pre-existing conditions?

Many thanks

Get married asap and be added to your wife's insurance is you best route.

Hi there,

Typically it is best to most likely wait until you are married (asap) and get yourself put on your spouse's insurance.

Obviously Crohns can be serious, compared to the average person that feels the risk to wait in the gap is worth it. Do you feel in the gap period that you will require additional medication or treatment, or are you bringing an ample supply of medication from the UK with you?

Keep in mind that the insurance mentioned in the referenced thread does not meet the federal standard under the law. That means it is considered for federal purposes about as good as if you had no insurance. I am also dubious about the coverage this insurance, however temporary, how well it would provide for you should you need it with such a preexisting condition. It's all the same thing with temporary insurances, insurances marketed toward new immigrants etc. They can be useful for some. But you may need to sign a waiver under a pre-existing clause. What sounds good on paper really depends on what happens when you really need to use it. And results can vary. Some work fine, and others don't.

I don't know the specifics of your wedding plans, but if you ever wanted coverage sooner, you could marry asap at a courthouse, and have your originally planned wedding on the date you wanted. That way you could get the ball rolling.
