Green card holder with a soon to expire Pakistani passport

I have somewhat of an odd question. I just received my conditional green card. My Pakistani passport expires in October this year. If I don't plan on traveling anytime soon, am I required to keep my passport updated or do I only have to do it when I plan on traveling? The reason is, that I will have to go to DC to have it renewed and I can not see myself going there anytime soon. I just want to make sure that I am not breaking any law by keeping an expired passport with me.

You are not required to keep an updated foreign passport. However, you might want to update it as you will not be able to travel outside the country.

You might want to check out the requirements for renewal with an active/valid passport vs. the requirements for renewal after expiration. There might be extra steps and costs associated with renewal after expiration. My next door neighbor from Pakistan, here on an H1b visa, has no immediate plans to travel abroad but she did travel the necessary 800 miles to Houston to renew her passport last month.

Couple of things..

1. Some embassies\nations make it harder to renew a document after expiration. Renewing before passport expires might be worth the trouble.

2. Have you checked with the Pak embassy if you can renew (and Fedex, pay) online? You might be able to avoid an unnecessary trip to DC.

Thanks all for replying. I checked with the Pakistani embassy and they have no issues with renewing an expired passport. Also govt of Pakistan is working on an online passport renewal website for Pakistanis living abroad. So I can wait it out.

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."
