My lil cat daughter is sick with most likely Feline herpesvirus (Upper Respiratory Infection) and Friday night we had to take her to the emergency vet for fluids and a switch of antibiotics (the one the shelter gave us made her puke and drool). It seems that the worst of the disease has passed but she's so congested she looks miserable. All she does is sit on my lap quacking like a duck.

How can I help her decongest a bit? Any other ideas for easing her pain until she's better?

I *should* be cleaning the house/listing stuff (ie my worldly possessions in their entirety) on eBay/getting ready for work tonight.

Instead I am (and have been for the past 3 hours) having an MSN Messenger conversation consisting almost entirely of emoticons, with my fiance's 9-year-old daughter, 'cos he got up and promptly went back to bed again!

My brain is about to implode from smiley-face overload! Heeeeeeelllllllppppppp!!!!

Aww I'm so sorry shes been sick! My cat when she was little had the flu too, I cannot remember what we did to help her...sorry! I just wanted to say I hope she gets feeling better!

You could run a really hot bath and sit in the bathroom with her. The steam might help her a little bit. Don't put her in the bath of course.... :P

Oo that's a good idea.

Oh brother, now Rey is calling her "duck" hehe

When my cats stomach was upset they said give her baby medicine so maybe something along the lines of what you would give to small kids, sparingly of course.

Aspirin is toxic to cats. I'd stay away from people medicine unless you clear it with the vet.

The steamy shower is a good idea; it's more or less what you'd do for a toddler with a clogged chest. Other than that, just let her rest it out.

Hmmm anyone else use a Vicks like product? That sounds like a good idea too. She's breathing a bit better right now but still sneezing like a duck and still wants to stay on my lap. We're watching Four Weddings and a Funeral together, hehe

Just give her a cuddle and keep her nice and warm. She'll recover, poor little thing. It's horrid when they are ill, it really is like one of the family is sick.

Many medicines for humans can also be okay for animals, although it would be smart to clear them with your vet. Even though many vet clinics probably wouldn't suggest it because they don't want to be responsible and they would prefer you come spend money in their office on medicine.

My mom worked in a vet hospital for over 20 years and we took anitbiotics for dogs on many occasions growing up. Call it crazy...but it's the exact same thing and we could get it for real cheap at the hospital :D

Anyway...the only "people" medicine I have ever given my cats and I know first hand that it is okay is pepto bismol. If anyone ever uses it, don't freak out when your pet begins to foam at the mouth a bit - I promise, it is normal and okay! Sorry that I can't think of anything at the moment specific to congestion. Hopefully your kitty will heal naturally very soon. I hate it when their sick and they can't tell you exactly how they feel. So sad :(

Best of luck and keep us posted on her health :luv:

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
