I submitted my I-130 application on 28th March 2016. I received an email 3 days later on 31st March stating that the case has been accepted and routed to Nebraska service center and in 7-10 days I'll receive the official receipt notice by standard mail. I haven't received the mail yet. However, since I have received the receipt numbers in the email and I can follow the case status on USCIS website, do I really need the form I-797 that USCIS sends through standard mail? Does it contain any additional information that is not there in the email or the case status tool on the USCIS website? I'm currently living in Dubai and from what I've heard the mail coming from US do sometimes get returned due to the PO Box system here in Dubai. Going forward I'm planning to change my mailing address so that the same problem does not occur with future notices. However do I really need to tell USCIS to re-send me the NOA1? The USCIS website shows the status of my case currently as follows:

"On March 28, 2016, we received your Form I-130, Immigrant Petition for Relative, Fiance(E), or Orphan, Receipt Number LINxxxxxxxxxx, and sent you the receipt notice that describes how we will process your case. Please follow the instructions in the notice. If you do not receive your receipt notice by April 27, 2016, please call Customer Service at 1-800-375-5283. If you move, go towww.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

Next Steps

If we accept your case, you will receive a receipt notice. If we reject your case, we will send you an explanation with instructions"

No you do not need the physical I797, but I would definitely have the petitioner call USCIS and confirm they have your correct address on file as that is where you will get the NOA2 and information from the NVC.

Thanks for your reply. My only concern at this point of time is whether USCIS was successfully able to draw the demand draft i posted with the I-130 application. If they had trouble drawing the demand draft or if they lost it would they include such information in the form I797?

I will surely get the address changed, but the problem with that is the USCIS website does not allow me to post any address outside of US while changing the address. Whereas in the original I130 application I have given a UAE address. I have already talked to a friend of mine who is living in US and he's agreed to receive my mail and forward it to me. However at this point of time I do not want to add any unnecessary delays to my case. If the form I797 does not contain any important information I would not want USCIS to resend it to me and as a result delay my case.

An unrelated post has been removed -- the author started his own thread.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
