I am filing for citizenship on basis of my residence for almost 6 years in the US. I originally came to the US on a K1 visa and was married for 5 years to my ex-husband. I have a couple of questions about the N-400 form:

1. My ex-husband has 2 children from a previous marriage who I raised full-time as my own and still maintain a relationship with them. Do I list them on the form even though their father and I divorced? The form says 'current stepchildren'. I am not sure what 'current' really means in this case.

2. The part where you list your employment -- I had worked as a freelance translator from home for a few months in 2014 and 2015. When I filed my taxes for that year; the tax person said that I either needed a 1099 form from the person that I have translated the books/documents for or I needed to file as self-employed but the income that I made did not qualify me to apply as self-employed. Do I list that I worked as a freelance translator on the form or not?

3. I listed my approximate travel dates on the form. Non of my visits outside of the US exceeded 6 months? Is listing approximate travel dates okay?

Thanks in advance.

1. No, unless you have a legal relationship with them, ie you adopted them.

2. Sounds like it wasn't a proper business, so no.

3. Look at your archieved emails and credit card statements, it should give you good dates to use. If you do not have exact dates, make a note of that in a supplementary piece of paper.

Look at your passport stamps. That'll give you US re-entry dates and the dates you entered (and in some cases the dates you exited) other countries.

If you went to the UK, for example, you'll have a UK entry stamp and a US entry stamp.

If you went to Egypt, you'll have an Egypt entry stamp, an Egypt exit stamp, and a US entry stamp.

Your interviewer may look at these stamps during your interview (usually only if you've traveled quite a bit).

If you use Gmail for your itineraries, the Inbox version is very useful for immigration purposes as it automatically groups all your "Trips" together in individual itineraries. This is how I figured out my travel dates over the past 5 years.
