Hi guys! We're about to start our k1 process and my fiance wanted to hire a lawyer. Told him we didn't need it but he still hired one and paid 1750$!! Which covers hiring fee and initial process! He paid already but didn't sign any contract yet. Can he still get his money back? If we haven't started anything yet? Or is it a good idea to push through with hiring a lawyer? We're both single and have no kids so I don't think it'll be complicated but he's in the military and I've heard that its harder to process the visa but I'm not sure. Is there anything we can say to the lawyer to give us even a percentage of our money back since he haven't started yet.

750$ hiring fee

1000$ initial process of k1 visa

if no work was done,

then

of course can ask for refund.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Yep, no contract was signed and no work was done. Ask for the refund.

It isn't harder if he's in the military. The only thing you'd have to work out is logistics -- if he's deployed when you need to come to the US and marry/adjust status etc.

There are also plenty of military members on this forum who are going through/have gone through the K1 process and they can speak from experience.

I paid $895 to easyvisaweb which is a lawyer office based out of California. Thye work quickly and efficiently. Looking back I could have done everything myself but they do make it easy to organize and upload everything you will need. $1750 is way too much considering the other expenses you will incur throughout the process ( $340 filing fee, medical fee, police record fee, visa fee, any travel expenses, etc. plus you have to pay $1085ish once you get married for the AOS, EAD, and AP alltogether). It adds up quickly.

I suggest you do it on your own, my initial plan was to hire one too but when I read how to do it here in VJ Forum ( thanks!!) , I realized I can do it. Just follow the instruction here on KI Visa filing and if you have questions, just post here. I did mine on my own and I have a complicated situation and the only RFE I received is I forgot to put X on one question. Save your money for your wedding!!!
