Hello Everyone,

I am a freelance musician and I am finishing a doctor of music in Finland. In the midst of my doctorate, I married my American husband and set up home base in New York. For the past three years, I have been working remotely from New York so that I can maintain continuous residence in the USA and apply for naturalization.

I can file my N-400 on June 24, 2016. I meet all the requirements so far - 18 months of the past 3 years in the USA, 3 months residence in my State / Service District. We file all our taxes, I've been working in the USA etc. We have had no problems with the CR status or my AOS or anything else to date.

My problem / question is - I have to go to school in Finland submit and defend my thesis, present at some conferences, and do some coursework this year. Since this will take more than 90 days in an 180 day period (the amount of time I am allowed in the Schengen area), I will need to get a Finnish Student Residence card or a short term student visa.

My question is - will having / applying for this Finnish Student Residence Card or a Short-Term Visa, disrupt my permanent residence status in the USA?

As far as I can tell online, the biggest concern in the eyes of the USCIS are stays and travels that exceed 6 months. This would not be the case for me. I would be gone for just over 3 months and I already meet all the eligibility requirements for naturalization.

I can also see on the N-400 that I can list my schools, so it should be clear that I am attending school in Finland but living in the USA, but I don't want to apply for a visa or student residence permit if it will ruin my naturalization eligibility. But I don't want to derail my graduation.....But I don't want to ruin my naturalization eligibility.....But......

You get it.

Thank you for any help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you will break the State residency requirement?
