Passport question.

My fiance is from Haiti and his passport expires next June. I'm wondering if his residency change will allow him to get an American passport and or how that works for traveling outside the country. Or should we just renew his Haitian passport before he leaves?

Only USC can get US passport. He will have to renew his Haitian passport.

As others said already, your fiance wont be able to get an american passport until he becomes an american citizen.

If he moves to the US before his passport expires I'm pretty sure he will be able to renew his passport from a Haiti embassy or consulate in the US.

By next June, do you mean 2016 or 2017? I believe there's a 6 month validity requirement on an applicant's passport at the time of the visa being printed. If it's 2016, get a new passport yesterday. If it is 2017, there's a few other things to consider. They will print his visa in his passport. So if he already got his passport back from the embassy or if his interview is in the next month, he's probably going to need to keep that old passport... I assume that they are required to surrender their old passport in order to get a new one. I'm not sure how long it takes in Haiti to get a new passport but he'll definitely need one for the interview. If he can't renew it because of the reasons above, he'll need keep the old one for a while longer. Then he can either take a long vacation to Haiti and renew it in country or I believe there's an embassy in Washington DC where it can be done. I haven't researched if it can be done by mail so either way could end up being expensive. My husband's will expire about the same time so I'll find out soon about renewing in Washington since I refuse to have to wait for the Haitian government to renew his passport before seeing him again if he were in country.

My fiance's passport expires in May so I called before submitting our I129-F because i read that part about being valid for 6 months. I was told he would be fine as long as he got it renewed before the visa is issued.
