So I got married, two weeks ago. We are gonna start AOS next month. But I take my husbands name, and I allready have an SSN number. We went to the office yesterday and they told us, they couldnt change it. Because we had to notify homeland security first.

I never heared of that step and when we called homeland, they just told us about the paperwork to file for AOS.

Dont u change name before AOS? So it is easier? I live in Arizona btw, not sure if its a state difference

The SSA would not allow me to change my name until after I had my green card in hand :( After my AOS was approved and I received my green card in the mail, we came back and they issued a new SSN card with my married name.

No name change info? Check responses #s: 6,7 11, 48, 50. Though maybe not your specific question and answer.

The beauty of this forum is when you find out the answer to a particular situation, post a response. That way everyone benefits.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Even though the marriage certificate functions as a legal name change document, the SSA tends to become flustered when it is combined with immigration activities. My wife got her SSC in her maiden name even though we had the marriage certificate because they said the name had to match the I94, and passport. Once she received her EAD with her married name, we were able to change the SSC.

Good Luck!

You can change your name as soon as you applied for AOS (so they have your new name in the system), and you still didn't stay here longer than 90 days, after that you can only change name with GC (or EAD). Still worst part no matter you have SSN already and have permanent resident status, they still need to check something :D and you might need to wait for new card up to a month... annoying.. Though they give you receipt of name change, and you allowed to work while you waiting for card with new name, I was even able to keep my old card till I get new..

Fastest and easiest option for name change is applying for AOS with new name..
