Going to Morocco and need some info/advice

Hello everyone !

I am looking to get some info on visiting Morocco to see my fiance. We plan on going to Agadir and the surrounding areas to meet his family and get to know each other more and I am aware of the customs and beliefs and want to be sure that we do not violate any laws. I hear there is a paper that we must get in order for him and I to be together in public. I hear that we have to go to the police and get this paper. Does anyone know what it is called? Can anyone explain to me what it all entails and what I will need to bring with me besides my passport ?

There is no paper needed from the police in order to be together in public.

It is illegal for an unmarried male and female to share a hotel room.

Yes Im aware of the hotel situation but there is a paper that we need to get from the police that protects my interest. I keep hearing about it from many of my Moroccan friends. Something that says I'll be staying here and who I will be with, etc.

I've traveled to Morocco many times and have never heard of such a paper.

I've visited many times to Agadir and surrounding cities, before my husband and I were married and never needed any paper to carry. The only thing I would take when we would go out is my passport just for identification. Never was stopped or asked by anyone. Like other poster stated before; the hotel is the only place you have to show proof your married.

There is a document that you can get at the police department that states he is responsible for you while in Morocco. We got one the first time I visited as a precaution. Hubby says it was through the foreign affairs division. Copies of our ID's and a letter from him as well as some officiating stamps and a fee were required. He can't remember the name of the document and we were never stopped and asked for it by anyone. Hope that helps

There is no paper that you need or have to have for you to be in public with your fiance. I have been there also several times and it is not an issue. You do have to be married to share a hotel room or an apartment and would have to have your marriage papers with you. But just to be in public, no. Just go and enjoy your time and relax!

Ok quick update:

Went to Morocco, had an amazing time. Got stopped 3 times and asked about this paper. My soon to be brother in law said next timed I come I should have this paper. Of course we were able to go without having to "tip" our wonderful police officers. They really grilled my fiance and each time was for about 45 min. But for anyone going to Morocco to see their boyfriend/fiance should stop the local police station and get it.

Interesting you were stopped three times and asked for this paper. All the times I was there in Morocco, this did not happen to us. Where were you guys that they would stop you? Were they smaller/rural towns? We were in Agadir too but again we were in the touristy beach area and perhaps the police won't stop touristy looking people like us?

We went everywhere and it didn't happen. But again we were in all major cities like Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh. I'll have to ask my husband about this paper. Good to know! Thanks for sharing.

I'm so sorry to hear you guys got harassed. I only knew about it because my husband worked in the tourism industry there for 20-some years and had many friends that do, as well. Now you know for next time! Glad it was an overall pleasant experience!

I too have been to Morocco five times, each time staying for months. and traveling in different cities similar to Blair&Ismeal

Though dressing modestly I still stood out usually people speaking French to me assuming I was. People dont ask for papers. That was Eastern Europe in the mid/late Eighties..ha.

We were stopped by officers a couple of times for a few different reasons but never once was a "paper" requested of me.

Something must have made you stand out for some reason....

I have never heard of this paper until your post (which is always good to learn more)

This is my second time here in Morocco and I have traveled all over and never been stopped. I was told if we get stopped all I had to do is show my ID. I have been here for now for over 2 months and did not have to get any paper to travel around. I did go register with the police dept for my daughter and I but only so they know I'm in the city and area for so long. I just asked my fiancé and he said there is no such paper. You only go register with the police dept. hope you have fun on your next trip. I love it here and will be back as much as k can.
