Changing name in Ukraine

I got married abroad. In my marriage certificate is not indicated that i am taking my husband name. I would like to change my name now but in Zags i was told that i can do so but based just on my right to change name and not based on marriage because it took place abroad.

My question is: did anyone went through this procedure?

My wife's maiden name is on our marriage certificate as well. You have the right to change your name to your husband's surname. Your marriage certificate is your proof of taking on his surname. To legally change your name, simply list your husband's surname on all your initial paperwork, including your green card, SSN, etc.

My marriage certificate did not reflect a name change either, however, I went to the social security office with my marriage certificate and changed my last name, no problems.

You've been told the truth - in Ukraine, if your Marriage License doesn't indicate that the name after marriage has been changed into XXXXXX, they (Zagses) don't recognize the Marriage License as a basis for a such change

You can do that, based on your right to change the name. But as far as I know it's a long and exhausting process. First, you have to apply for "permission" to change your name. Zags will consider your application. It can take up to 6 months. When (or IF) your application got approved, only then you can start the "eternal" process of changing your name in all docs - internal passport, travel doc and etc..

Thank you for your comments. No matter how illogical it seems, i guess i will pass on changing name in Ukraine, too much hassle:(

Gitana, have you had any issues traveling with two passports with different last names? I've only visited Russia once since I've become a citizenship, and it was a smooth trip, but I am always very nervous about it.

Mariya, I still haven't changed my name and since it's too complicated i don't think i will change for now
