National ID Card Regulations Issued -- UPDATED

The Department of Homeland Security released long-delayed requirements for the standardization of state identification documents Thursday. States must start issuing the new internal passports by May 2008, or else their citizens will not be able to board planes or enter federal courthouses. Civil libertarians say the requirement, known as the REAL ID Act, creates a national identity card that presents significant privacy risks to Americans. Many states oppose the rule as an unfunded mandate and an encroachment on states rights.

National ID Card Rules Unveiled

National ID Card Regulations Issued

I don't know if Pennsylvania State is ready, but from the look at my DL, it seems...YES. Anyone worries about this new ID regulation? Anyone thinks of a good reason why? I'm worry about the vital information of me now stored and shared to everyone and their grandmother, loss of Identity due to database hacking and ID theft.... Great! Why bother to spend all kind of money to obtain GC and such, so now we have to spend more money on the new ID Card. It seems like I will be back right back in Vietnam - The Police State once this new RealID is in full swing...

Not happy about this!!!! Or should I be?

I've posted about this subject (in a way) before.

Basically, Canada is known for having a citizenship card for ALL naturalised citizens (optional for citizens-by-birth--one such was found from KAL 007 in 1983). This ID is somewhat more convenient to carry than the large certificate.

I actually thought it would be a good thing if the US had done a similar step (which it has not to this date).

However, I had a good guffaw on this quote from the "Regulations Issued" article.

DHS estimates that it will take only 44 minutes for a current driver's license holder to get a certified copy of their birth certificate, travel to the DMV and get a new license when it expires.

Montgomery County (MD) and Fairfax County (VA) are known for all-day line-waits at MVA/DMV offices--most residents of these would cheer if they got their licence renewed (or swapped-over) within THRICE that timeframe.

And if you DO have an existing licence from another state (which you didn't bother to swap-over) what happens--will the feds (we know already that the state doesn't like it) allow you to keep that licence till it expires?

That would be quite easy to implement WITHOUT government; just write SSN on there in laundry-marker.

(no surprise gov's way is costlier, less intelligent, and more intrusive)

Haha one time I was crossing a checkpoint in the West Bank and this Israeli soldier (I think he was Russian -- he had a Russian-sounding accent) demanded my "ID card." I told him I don't have one. I had already given him my passport, even offered him my driver's license lol, but he didn't want any part of that -- he just kept insisting I produce an "ID card." Finally after watching all this with an amused look, a higher-ranking soldier came up and tapped him on the shoulder and explained to him that "Americans don't have that -- they don't need it."

Anyway, I am not looking forward to hearing "Your papers, please" here in the U.S.

I guess it is time for me to get a new Alberta licence (albeit, every Canadian province considers using the licence while residing OUTSIDE the province as illegal; but hey--it conks out the entire RealID system).

(and yes, I do have a document to prove residence in Alberta--the "large certificate" of Canadian citizenship, not valid without the photo-card).

IMO, the fact that most states (except CA where the time limit is shorter) asks you to swap-over your licence within 30 days of coming there is already way too intrusive (as I don't see why I shouldn't have TX plates and an IL licence while living in CA).
