Car insurance with a EU Driver License showing your "first issued" date?

Hi all,

I need some collective knowledge here. :) My fiance-turned-husband has been driving since 2004 and obviously I want the Insurance company to insure him as an experienced driver. On the EU Driver License (ok, Russia is not EU, but they follow the exact same standard now) on the back there is a *car* pic with text of "04/12/2004". If read correctly as per EU standards, the driver license states that he has had driver license in driving regular passenger cars since that year.

However.

The insurance is refusing to buy it. :) I have been most helpful in providing links to a) official documentation of EU on the matter b) the fact that MA recognizes EU licenses for up to 1 year etc etc, but somehow they request a "certified translation". How one can translate a picture and a date is beyond me. They also claim I have a conflict of interest here (damn right I do!) and thereby they are unwilling to accept my translation. Of course, I also had a conflict of interest when doing translations of my husband's records for immigration purposes, but what's good enough for US government is not enough for those greedy bastards. Alas.

Soooo... Has anybody been able to successfully show their driver record to insurance company to lower the premium? Or am I just fighting a war that cannot be won? Bonus points if you can point me to an insurance company that's available in MA, or to a translation service that has done the "translation" (i.e. writing out the field labels) for you.

i put a few quotes in through a couple websites. I was called by one of them (liberty mutual) and they didn't had any issues putting in my date i got my license in the Netherlands after i explained the situation. I'm not sure if you shopped around but try a couple different companies and see what they can do.

We got the safe driver discount by showing a copy of the letter from Scottish DVLA stating no accidents since he began driving. It was on official document. We went through AAA for insurance. There is one in Saugus on rt one by Applebee's not too far from you if you want to stop in and talk to them. You could get a translated copy done and notarized. Our bank does that for free.

Russia isn't the EU, so that acceptance doesn't really apply.

What they need is something official from Russia / home country showing his driving record / license history. Without it you pay the inexperienced driver rate.

That was my experience with the MA RMV in the past and it does not seem to have changed.

Hi Ralph,

That's interesting! I have Liberty Mutual as well for myself, and they are the ones giving me trouble. Could you please share the agent name in private message? Maybe I should switch. :)

Thanks!

Dina

That is nice. Unfortunately, in Russia they have stopped provided such documentation on an official level a couple of years ago. :( So literally nothing that we could give. I'll take a look at AAA; thanks for the suggestion!
