This might be a dumb question but, how do you get legally married in the US?

I will not have a religious ceremony, So do I just show up at a court house and request to get married? Marriage certificate vs licenses ? Court ceremony, do I need that?

First thing to do is to google the terms marriage license and marriage certificate. Next go online to the state/municipality website where you reside and search for marriage requirements. If you want a courthouse marriage you may have to make an appointment, that would be another thing to check out in your wedding search.

That should get you started in the right direction.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Getting married in the U.S consists of different requirements depending on the state and or county that you intend to be married. Best check the websites for the county and or state to get their basic rules. Some jurisdiction requires a waiting period, some longer than the other after purchasing the marriage license. Some jurisdiction will issue marriage certificates same or next day. Marriages are performed by certified marriage officers for free or a minimal fee at city hall, courthouse etc.

You purchase a marriage license then the person who performs the marriage ceremony certifies you are married and a marriage certificate is issued. Like others have posted please google you county marriage license requirements as they vary.

Go to the County Clerk's office. You both sign documents, being IDs (Passport for the beneficiary) and proof of address. You pay a fee and are issued a Marriage License.

You then find out when the County Judge will be conducting public marriages, at the County Courthouse, and get onto his/her schedule.

You show up on marriage day, register in and get in line to see the judge.

The actual ceremony is about 5 minutes long and no witnesses are required.

Fancy clothes are not required.

Afterwards you pay a fee (I suggest paying for multiple certified copies of the Marriage Certificate, like 2 or 3) and wait for that to be mailed to you (about a week).
