Tricky question I think, hopefully someone will be able to answer this (or guide me in the right direction). I've read the AOS guides and K1 Guides... I still don't understand what has to happen.

Once we've married, my fiancé is being deployed. So that leaves me in the US, newly married, and not being able to work quite yet.

I still don't quite understand the Advance Parole/ AOS process.

For the sake of the argument, let's say we marry in June 2016.

- After we marry, I apply for AOS/ EAD/ AP, correct? The EAD allows me to work in the US, and the AP allows me to travel back to Canada? Am I able to travel back to Canada to work for a few months while he's away using AP?

Thanks so much in advance, I know there is a LOT of knowledge here and I'm just missing some key points I guess.

Yes you should apply for the AP/EAD at the same time that you apply for your AOS. The AP/EAD is a card that will take approximately 2-3 months for USCIS to issue.

The EAD will allow you to work in the US and the AP allows you to travel back and forth to Canada. Realize that you will have to be paroled in every time that you come back into the US. This means that you will have to go into secondary and wait while they take your photo and fingerprints as well as stamp your passport.

You will not be allowed to work in Canada while he is gone. I believe and someone else can correct me on this, that if you do work/reside in Canada while waiting for your AOS approval that this will be considered abandoning your application.

Hopes that this helps a little bit.

No, it allows you to return to the US. Without it you'll not be allowed back in until you do a CR-1 Spousal visa.

Am I able to travel back to Canada to work for a few months while he's away using AP?

Yes

Thanks so much in advance, I know there is a LOT of knowledge here and I'm just missing some key points I guess.

Do like the rest of us and make sure our resume is up to date, explore the neighborhood, get some new hobbies or continue old ones... I really recommend leaving the house/apartment or you'll go nuts.

Thankfully I'll be able to volunteer around the neighbourhood doing different things. And everything is accessible by bike! :) Thanks for your input!

Your husband is in the military? Me too ;) I am going through the AOS process it's been a couple months now since I arrived in the US (5 months-ish) and yes I am going nuts while my husband works the whole day and has duty :(

After you file for AOS, it takes awhile before USCIS get back to you but I do suggest getting your dependent ID before your husband deploys... so you have access to military benefits (health care, the commissary, etc.).

I filed in August for AOS and I haven't received EAD temp card to work. I am bored as hell.

Dependant ID... That didn't even occur to me. Good thinking! Any idea where to start with that? Or maybe who to contact? Thanks!

I hope the AOS / EAD goes quickly for you! I can only hope it goes by quickly for me as well.

You can only get one once you are married. You need to go with your husband to get it and have your marriage certificate in hand. It's also possible to get one without your husband present if he's deployed -- there's a form: http://www.military.com/spouse/military-life/military-resources/military-dependent-id-cards.html

Also you should know that when you're married you get Basic Allowance Household (BAH), which increases (more money) since your husband now has dependent (you).

I was aware of BAH, that definitely helps. I'll look into the ID though. Thanks so much!
