Don't be too hard on the OP... people have different priorities. Clearly, maintaining permanent resident status in the US was not one of them in this case.

They don't always remind you that it's about to expire. It happened to my dad a couple of years ago, he was in the process of applying for naturalization and I guess didn't really pay attention to his GC expiration date. He was only gone for a couple of weeks, and it expired while he was out of the country. He called the embassy and they gave him a re-entry permit

AOS

01-29-07 - marriage

02-07-07 - AOS package mailed to Chicago

02-09-07 - AOS package delivered

02-13-07 - NOA1 date

02-21-07 - Biometrics letter

02-24-07 - NOA1 received

03-01-07 - Biometrics taken

03-15-07 - Transferred to The Sucky/Slow Center (TSC)... to "speed up" processing.

03-17-07 - Transferred notice e-mail

03-20-07 - Received TSC transfer letter

03-21-07 - application pending at TSC e-mail.

05-14-07 - Misinfopass appt. COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME.

06-05-07 - I-131 e-filed

06-11-07 - AP NOA1

07-09-07 - Received weird looking letter for AP, but online status hasn't changed

Last Touch - AOS 3/24, AP 7/03

USCIS renewing and greencard rules

I've quoted the bits that I think most helpful to your cousin, and anyone else wondering about the 10 year green card expiring.

Thanks for the info. I'll forward that on to him.

So in the case of me, having a expired K1 visa in my passport with a pending AOS, should I be, by law carrying my passport with the expired visa, or the NOA1 for my I-185? Or both? I'm curious now.

K1 Journey:

April 13/06 NOA1 from NSC

June 1/06 - Moved to CSC

August 12/06 APPROVED - NOA2!!

August 28/06 Left NVC. . . Vancouver Bound!

September 27/06 Interview APPROVED, with visa in hand

October 29/06 Moving Date

December 30/06 Married!!

AOS Journey:

January 16/07 Sent out AOS, EAD, and AP docs

January 23/07 NOA1's for AOS, EAD and AP

February 13/07 Biometrics in Portland, OR

April 7/07 EAD and AP Received

April 24/07 Interview Scheduled . . . and APPROVED, stamp and all!

May 7/07 Greencard is in my hands!

ROC Journey:

February 17/09 Sent I-751 to CSC

February 18/09 NOA1

March 14/09 Biometrics appt.

April 22/09 Date of Approval!!

June 25/09 Greencard arrives in the mail!

You should ALWAYS have your passport with you.... wouldn't hurt to have a copy of your NOA1 from your I-485.

Thanks, I guess I'll add my NOA1 to my purse which already had the passport in it.

Annie Carried colored copies with her in case something happened. We figured if we really had to prove things we would be allowed to get them. Obviously we carried the originals while traveling.

The Green card on the other hand clearly states that she must carry that.

I just realized today (2/27) that my Green Card has expired on 2/4. I happen to be abroad on business...

I'm confused what should I do now? Have I lost my permanent resident status? How do I apply for a new Green Card? How do I enter US again in tree days?

Thanks so much in advance for all the help!

They don't always remind you that it's about to expire.

#######....It's not their job to pay attention and remind your dad to when his GC is expired. Their time is too value to work on AOS cases and approving them for VJ people here. Otherwise, they would have hired new people whose job is just to send out reminder to people like your dad. It is for Dad's own benefit to remember this kind of stuff. IMHO.

Back to OP: go to the embassy/consulate, ask to speak with Chief of Immigrantion/Visa Unit, beg him to issue you a re-permit of entry. Good luck!
