so my brother is going to meet his fiancee in manila...what is the cheapest yet reliable airline you can recommend... so far in our research it was china airline has the cheapest price but we never used it

china air and reliable don't go along together. Try EVA, Cathay Pacific, United/ANA, Asiana, KAL, Emirates, Etihad, Quatar, etc..

I have flown China Airlines (Taiwanese) and found them spartan but reliable. There is also Air China (PR China) that is a different airline that I have not flown. I have found JAL and EVA to be good, Korean Airline to be superb. I've heard good things about Asiana, Cathay Pacific and (of course) Singapore. I know less about the Middle East airlines, have heard they have good fares, good service, but do not treat their employees well.

Do you live in a major coastal hub, with competitive fares? If not, check routing via say Los Angeles. I sometimes find that searching Nashville-Los Angeles-Manila can give me a cheaper fare than checking Nashville-Manila. I'm surprised the computers don't do that. But check both ways.

Thank for for updating your timeline. (My Assistant, then edit/add my timeline.)

Try asaptickets.com. They are a ticket consolidator and many times they can save you a lot of money. Use them to compare from other ticketing sites you have visited.

Through data combed by Kayak, they have found that if you book 5 months ahead and travel on a Wednesday you will find the best prices for travel to Asia. Of course you can't use that bit of information when you don't know when you are getting your visa, but just for thought.

Other sites to check for fares:

https://www.google.com/flights/

http://www.kayak.com/

http://www.skyscanner.com/

http://www.seatguru.com/

https://www.hipmunk.com/

These are the people who write the software for most major air carriers that use for their reservation systems.

http://matrix.itasoftware.com/

I often use the ITA Software Matrix, which is one of the most useful tools to search for available flights and low fares. ITA Matrix is awesome, in that you can type in all kinds of commands like which airline you want to fly, certain dates, specific airports and whether you will change airports to get a better price. After you click “Search” you will be taken to a calendar displaying the lowest fare departing each day. Clicking on a particular date will bring up the lowest prices departing on that date.

Unfortunately the ITA Matrix is only for finding airfares. You don’t have the ability to book directly through this site. Write down the dates and flight numbers that work for you, and book directly through the airline site or online travel agency you prefer. I hope this helps.

For advance instructions in using ITA go here for a great article: http://travelcodex.com/2012/01/advanced-routing-language-in-ita/

Always been flying with Delta to LA and San Diego, my fiance also flew thru Delta whem he went to MNL last June. By far cheapest during our dates of travel. Well they are reliable so far.

It will actually all depends on the dates of travel and when to purchase your ticket. I bought my ticket un July for Sept travel to US, Delta was the cheapest got it for $946 to San Diego. I only trrust Drlta, PAL, JAL, Korean Air, Cathay. Singapore air are always expensive whenever I check. You can get good fares with Korean air sometimes and they have excellent service too. I just don't want to lay over in Korea given the recent MERs scare.

Plan on travelling to the Phils on low season. Peak Seasons are during Christmas and Holy week. Travelling now to Nov can be ideal.

I will be flying to the Philippines in October and I will likely be buying a ticket through Cathay Pacific. I have no experience with them but have read good reviews online and I can get a round trip ticket for about $800. Anyone have any experience with Cathay Pacific?

Just a suggestion for the admins, whoever they may be that it might be a good a idea to pin the top 5-10 answers to questions that new members always seem to have before their travel date. Over 18 or so months it seems as if there are a few repeat questions that get buried and it may be convenient to pin them to the top, not saying that anyone would read them there either.

Just a thought.

did you have bad experience with china air?

Cheap and reliable don't go together. You get what you pay for.

Look on Priceline.com, expedia.com, and kayak.com.

i think it some ways it does
