Hi all

I managed to moan my way into the tdap vaccine and mmr (1st course) today at my NHS clinic, the tdap was the booster but didnt include the pertussis vaccine.

The nurse wouldn't touch that due to me not being a pregnant woman!

I've called a few places and all seem like a no. I'm curious if anyone in the UK has been successful at getting this and if so how! Not sure if I can just say I'll pay for it and they will then do it

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

So you had a Td vaccine? Tdap has pertussis. Tdap/IPV has pertussis and polio. Got any more info, like a brand name or how it was written up? Do you have previous records of pertussis vaccine as a child?

If it comes to it, you can pay for a shot at Knightsbridge. When is the medical exam?

It was the diptheria, tetanus, and polio shot I asked if it included petussis and was told no that was a separate shot. Not sure of the brand I can call and ask tomorrow.

Not scheduled medical yet just wanted to get thinks done in advance. 2nd mmr 15th August.

That's the one I had. So did my daughter. Diphtheria, tetanus and polio. I refused the pertussis for her and the nurse at the medical was curious, but fine with that as we had both had the required doses of the D and T which is what they are looking for.

I just had my vaccines done and was missing pertussis (had whooping cough as an infant -- of course, no medical record of it now!), and the nurse said it's only licensed in the UK for babies/pregnant women. They simply cannot provide it otherwise, so if you didn't get it, there's not much you can do.

Just had a follow up call from the travel nurse at my GP surgery.

They're doing the Tdap & MMR on prescription to be administered at the surgery.

She's gone all out to sort this, mainly to educate herself in case she gets asked again, & got advice on the whooping cough vaccine from the department for public health.

Its probably down to each individual surgery as to whether they are prepared to help out.

Failing that the Tdap is available at knightsbridge at a cost!!

Well I kept calling and annoyed them into submission! Just need to see about the whooping cough or get this at knightsbridge if they insist.

Sounds like a very good nurse who is trying to learn and accommodate your needs to match US requirements. My husband's surgery wasn't bothered. They just gave him a baby version even though they told him at first there was a shortage at the time and it was reserved for babies. Also despite it's not recommended for adults. Then they called and said they got some in and he could have one. Free too. Some charge for it.

It isn't worth a huge hassle if your surgery doesn't cooperate. Pay for it at Knightsbridge is a good idea. Also there has been discussion in another thread that Knightsbridge doesn't even understand it totally and give you credit for T, d, and polio. If they sign off a Tdap line (with pertussis) when you actually had tetanus, diptheria, and polio then you are signed off so no worries. Mistake? Maybe, but hey, you got signed off.
