Just wondering when you changed your last name to your husbands.

i want to go and change my name, however, i dont want to mess anything up with the process.

do we even have to provide notification to the embassy that we changed our name?

In my case we have already had our interview, my husbands case is in admin processing. i want to get my name changed, but dont want to cause any headaches.

anyone with experience please let me know what you did to notify the embassy and any problems it caused

We got married in December, by Feb. my name was changed. So I guess about 2 months. I did Social security card, driver's License, work i.e. 401k, health insurance, some bills, and school.

But after 14months there are still a few places it isn't changed.

My name was changed before we filed anything.

I came on a K-1 visa. We had to get married on 90 days, and I could've requested my ssn before getting married, instead I waited so I could ask for it with my married name. We got married, I changed my name, requested for the ssn and started my AOS using my married name. I believe this is the best way to do such.

Are you a K-1 as it says on your timeline? You said ''your husband'' I'm confused.

I did the same thing.. waited until we were married and then changed my name at the SSN office, and will get DL and submit AOS paperwork under the new married name.

I had previously been issued a SSN # in my formerly married name, on a separate visa in the 90's so I did a name change and it was quick and easy and painless as a side note.

I have a question in regards to this as well

I heard that once you get married youre "technically" not anymore no the K-1 so you have to wait for EAD to get a SSN.

My plan was then to file for SSN, get married, then change SSN name to my married name, and then file for everything else with my married name (AOS, EAD, driver license, etc)

But also...I want to get married in Michigan and I have read somewhere that this states requires a SSN to get the marriage license...so then no choice to apply fot it before the wedding..not sure if it is true and I dont know where to look for that really.

So I am..huh. confused??

Which one first, SSN or marriage?

Thanks

It is possible to get a ssn before you get married. But if you plan on changing names, I don't see a point, as you're going to have to change the ssn to your married name. So get married, apply for snn with your married name and then apply for EAD/AOS. In order to apply for AOS you need to have your ssn.

I got married within two weeks of arriving here and started changing my name immediately. Well actually there wasn't too much to change since I had nothing here, but I started applying for things in my married name - bank accounts, military ID, SSN. I recently tried to change my Dutch passport to my married name but the Netherlands will not allow a woman to be known solely by her husband's name. They make you keep your married name on all official documents and on my passport under my maiden name it has my married name. It sucks because I wanted to shed my maiden name for good and now I feel stuck with it.

I didn't know on the passport you can have your married name. Is it something that we all have to do? I only have my maiden name on my passport. All my ids here (dl's, ssn, military id) have my married name. I only kept my passport with my maiden name.

Well in some case for example if you're keeping your name it is best to get your ssn as soon as possible, that way after you get married you can apply for AOS/EAD right away since you already have your ssn.

In my case, since I was changing my name, I waited after married to receive my ssn, which delayed my AOS, since I had to wait for my ssn to arrive. But if I had asked for my ssn before I got married on my maiden name, I believe I would have to wait anyway after getting married to change my ssn to my married name so I could apply for AOS/EAD. In my case the easiest thing to do was wit to change my name and then apply for ssn so I could start the AOS on my married name, that way wouldn't cause any problems in the future.
