I can never be found when companies use SS number to verify identity! I noticed it first when I tried to do credit score and then when my 401k adviser contacted me to say there was no match and then today when I tried to access my lab results online and couldnt be verified based on SS number, should I be concerned by this? FYI Iv been here since Jan 2014 arriving on k-1 visa and still waiting for green card if that makes a difference.

Hi

When my CR-1 visa was issued I was given an info sheet from the Consulate at Frankfurt telling me to go to the Social Security office if I did not receive my social security number within three weeks.

Anyway, I've been here since 10 June so went last week to see what's happening as I hadn't received my number. Apparently there was a discrepancy with my name and I could not be found. It turned out that my first and middle names have been classed as one single first name, as opposed to two separate names (which is what I stated on my visa application and G-125A). The lady at the office asked if I wanted to keep it as one whole name but I said no and she did a manual amendment to show that I have a first and middle name. Hopefully I will have my number within four weeks. She said it is not the first time she had seen this and most people just go with having a single first name, but I didn't want to, in case I have problems further down the line.

I wonder if this has happened to you? It might be worth going to your Social Security office to see how they have you listed.

Good luck!

I'm from the UK, hubby is from Michigan and is a retired US Army LTC.   We are currently stationed overseas.

what have you done to build up a credit score?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

If you have a thin credit file (little/no credit) then this is normal.

I have zero credit but I'm surprised I my ss number couldn't be used to verify my identity, maybe my name is wrong

Your identity is verified usually by pulling your credit and seeing that the number is attached to a person with your name. If you have a thin credit file then there's nothing to pull, hence your number and identity cannot be verified. In the beginning when all of these checks failed for me (even simple stuff like Google Wallet and others) I would usually have to send in a copy of my social security card. It's a little better now after a couple of years, but I still run into problems.

I still can't use the e-Verify self-check on myself; it throws up an error about having a short credit history to where it cannot generate enough questions to verify that I am who I say I am.
