I went to the bank today and tried to apply for a personal loan so I can have money to go back home to visit my family and friends. Unfortunately it was declined because I don't have long enough of a credit history. The loan officer said that I could try it again with a co-signer.

Hubby said he would ask his grandfather to be my co-signer..he will probably do that for me but it's still not garanteed that the loan will be granted..I really hope that it will work out I haven't seen my family for 2 years and I miss them terribly..I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Pretty ridiculous as they do not seem to have a problem giving unlawful immigrants a line of credit..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

US Banks suck for unsecured credit. Irrespective of income, it is all about the score and that sucks. Hopefully, the co-signer will make it happen for you. Good luck.

You could just apply for a standard credit card.. Those things are pretty easy to get..

I haven't gone home since I came to the US in June 2004, not that I don't miss families and friends, but I only have a small family back home. I'm currently trying to get my mom to come to the US, I think that's less expensive than me flying home to visit.

For the plane tickets, I'd use a credit card. I agree that it's best to have cash when you travel but a credit card offers more protection. Back in Oct. 04, I applied for a Chase credit card, I have no job but they approved me with an $8,000 credit limit, I put my husband's income though since they asked for household income. It was a good start to build my credit history. I never really used it but they increased my limit to $15K nonetheless, I have no idea why when there has been no activity in that card for years now.

So yeah, try the credit card route, I think that's the best option next to the personal loans. Good luck!

Wong Watkins, I understand. I haven't travelled to my country since 2005, and I won't go there for a few years more due to our financial situation. Thank God, my parents can afford to visit us from time to time... But I have other family members, like my grandma, who I miss so much... :(

When I told my husband that I would like to see my family at least once a year, he was surprized: "Why in the world would you want to see them so often??" He hasn't seen his relatives in years, and they are here in the US. I guess, to each his own...

Wong Watkins, definitely re-apply with a co-signer. You will succeed. And keep building your credit - you will have an okay credit score after one year of responsible credit use.

Best wishes (F) (F) (F) (F) (F) (F) (F) (F) (F) (F) (F) (F)

The main thing is to try to establish your credit history, YOu can start by getting a free credit report to see what's in there, in your case it should come out as blank, but small way to start, capital one always send those credit card offers, If your hubby has good credit history he can add you to his account within a few months you will start to get all kind of credit card mail offer. In less than 2 years my wife credit history went from 0 to over 700 credit score. It takes awhile but patience and small thing like paying bill on time, making more than the credit card minimum. I wish you goo luck with the 2nd try with a cosponsor, I hope your hubby could get it for you because if you get rejected a second time it only has negative effect to your credit score.

Gone but not Forgotten!

I do have 2 credit cards, with a really small credit limit since I haven't had a lot of credit built up yet..and I've only had them for a few months. I asked the loan officer if calling the credit card service to increase my credit limit would be an option and she said that I could try but usually they would not approve it until I have my card for at least a year.

I will probably go to the bank again with my grandfather-in-law..he's got excellent credit all his life, so I hope this will work out.

Thank you guys!
