I have my EAC, no social and no green card. Can I work?

I received my Employment Authorization card about three weeks ago and started applying for jobs. I have had an interview and got the job, but they are requesting I have a social so they can do a background check.

Don't I need my green card to apply for my social?

And can my immigration police check count as a background check?

You do not need your green card to apply for a SS. You will need your I-94 and your passport.

EAD card holders are eligible to apply for and receive the SSN card.

please go in to a SSA office and apply, today, todayish.

also study the I-9 form and instructions.


You do not need your green card to apply for a SS. You will need your I-94 and your passport.

ya, that works up to 74 days past the POE date.

With an EAD card in hand, it's a solid bet that it's way past 74 days past POE date.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

So if I go to the social security office today, I can apply straight away?

And how long does it take to receive the social security number?

I was convinced I has to wait for my green card, I can't believe it :/

Yes, you can go now. Take a completed SS-5 (http://www.ssa.gov/forms/ss-5.pdf), your EAD, and your birth certificate to your nearest SSA office. It will take about 7-10 days to receive your card in the mail.

apply for SSN card? yes, get into SSA office, apply using form SS-5.

Unsure when it will be issued to you, you need to listen to the clerk, make note if 'DHS Verification Needed' phrase is mumbled out of their lips or no.

Usually, the day after applying, you can go back and learn of status:

1. can get the # if no problems or

2. learn of problems

The card is mailed out, never given hand to hand.
