My wife just received her Learner Permit last Friday,

and we had two 1 hour driving practice sessions at large empty parking lot over the weekend.

No yelling, no punches, no scratches, and no hurt feelings...just yet...

but as you might have guessed, braking was rough and

she couldn't see anything but small distance straight ahead.

5 one hour driving instructions here costs about $400...about $80/hour.

Half the family and friends tell us to send her to the driving school

to avoid bickering with each other.

And the other half says paying $80/hour for practicing how to drive

is just waste of money, and that I should just teach her.

What did you guys do? :D

You should be able to finding driving instructors in your area for $40 per hour, A little more if they come to your house to pick up student

I paid someone to teach mine to drive, not worth the BS and hurt feelings that are sure to come....

I dont have my learner's permit yet but my husband is teaching me how to drive every weekends. I think in Tennesser we have to wait until i get my Green Card before I can apply for a Learner's Permit and Driver's License. We just drive around big empty parking lot near our house. I have to admit its really kinda stressful. My husband gets sad sometimes, he thinks he is not doing a good job teaching me thats why i get stressed. But im pretty sure its not him, its just really stressful for someone like me, first timer. :)

Just be patient and just practice.. practice practice.. She will get better. You will do fine teaching her.

I thought about taking my wife to a driving school, but I just stuck with it. She passed her driving test last month and she is doing great!

All the best to ya both!

Most schools seems to be charging at least $60/hour around here. Not bad of a business.

Heck...I should consider running such business on the side with some driving instructors. :)

If you are patient and wont freak out next to her, do it yourself. Save the money for other things, maybe she gets a prize if she doesn't wreck? Lol

We are both pretty calm, and her hand and eye coordination seems to be pretty good from

her computer game playing days... I figure a week of practice in the parking lot is enough

and then we will hit the streets.

I know it is stressful. First time I drove, I couldn't see any signs or dare to look at the

side/back mirrors. Only thing I could see was little bit of distance in front of the car.

So far, she's following my instructions carefully...so I got my fingers crossed.

You guys can continue on until you can't then decide what to do. Don't waste money if you don't have to IMO. But reread the learners/driver's manual to make sure you're not teaching her any bad habits, or anything accidentally illegal. (For instance where I grew up you can pull out into the intersection to wait to turn. Where I live, they do not want you to do that. In NY you can't turn right unless instructed, and just about everywhere else you can... )

My mom taught me how to drive. I drove around a parking lot for a long time learning how to use the clutch. An automatic is obviously easier to learn on and I started driving our automatic truck on back roads when I was 13. Start on low volume roads that don't have kids all over them. If there are some back roads, then by all means, go out there.

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.  - Dr. Seuss
