when I was studying in Holland I got a bank account with just the college ID I was attending to..

I don't see the big 'dangers' of some dude having a $300 limit credit card.. really don't.. and that actually would help lower crime, usually illegals keep their cash @ home, under the couch or something crazy like that, they get robbed a lot, even cops do it (around here).. so that'd keep their cash safe, and no robberies or deaths

only $300? is that the limit of this card?

you think BoA is gonna give them a $1000 limit credit card to start with? I don't think so.. for low credit customers the CC's start usually at $200 or $300 when they start, so I don't think the people withouth SS#'s are gonna be considered people with good credit

are you sure about that? i'd like to see something factual please.

meh don't have facts, but it's common sense.. would you as a bank give a guy without the 'proper documentation' a big credit limit?...

A retired couple from Europe buys a house in Florida to spend a few months there every winter. (It's nicer there, you know, for elderly bones during the cold season in Europe.)

They have in FL: property, a bank account, credit cards, but no SSN, because they do not need one.

Gathering all the opinions voiced in this thread, this couple:

o is illegal

o is criminal

o is a terrorist threat

o is Mexican

o is a burden on the US taxpayer

o should be refused entry into the US

Take your pick.

besides, while I'm a resident, not a citizen, I will be subject to those stupid paranoia act rules and whatnot, and I know you love being a good resident and 'oh yea i have nothing to hide etc etc'... but for me all that is aggravating and a loss of time, so, yeah, my main purpose is to be bothered the less possible with BS..

Nothing to do with Paranoia. It is what I call, America welcome to the 'rest' of the world.. It is up to the government to regulate this..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I guess this couple must have entered the country unlawfully by sailing to Florida from Europe..

PS How many homes can an unlawful resident purchase in most European Countries?

You don't have to be a resident of any particulary country to own a house in most parts of Europe. Mind you, that's probably an EU thing. Regardless, you can establish a bank account in the US without being a resident. Granted, in the past this was a simple thing, while nowadays you have to provide all kinds of proof of identity. Regarless, people have done this in the past, perfectly lawfully, and will continue to do so, quite lawfully and doing so doesn't make you an illegal immigrant.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Oh hush. Don't you know that a sloopy piece of journalism that asserts with no evidence at all that "customers without Social Security numbers, typically illegal immigrants" trumps all reality in the world of the interwebs ;).

if you have a vacation home in America, and presumably take use of the VWP, you're only here for a short time, so why you'd need a seperate cc acct instead of using your regular ones, is beyond me.

Cos let's face it...if you have the money to buy a hols home, you have money. If you have money, more often than not you have common sense (Paris H being an exception :P) if you have common sense, you're not going to use a card which more often than not will be having interest rates thru the nose.

Speculation? sure! I realize that's what I'm doing...but then again, aren't we all?
