I have just left the DMV in Virginia after enquiringabout obtaining a driving licence and I was told I would only have it vaid until my visa expires (k1) I'm already married. Also, I was advised that I would need to take a written and physical driving test to obtain one. Is this right? That means two driving test for carand motorcycles.

Do you think it would be more advisable to wait until I adjust or receive my EAD? I assume this overrides the 90 limit...

I would advise waiting. Your EAD should take no more than 3 months. Your state should have a legal period where you can drive on a license from outside of the country (but look into their laws).

Multiple tests sounds right. Varies state to state, but not rare to have to take a written and driving test and to need separate motorcycle and automotive licenses.

Yes, in most states, you have to first pass the written test to get the learner's permit,

and then you can go back to take the actual driving test.

Also, in Houston, we were not able to get driver's license until she had EAD or GC.

Though some poster said they were able to...but such inconsistency in DMV

and many or US government offices are not that surprising.

Even then...the single entry K1 visa expired at your POE.

so if one of the DMV is actually willing to issue a driver's license,

then it will only be good until I-94 expiration date..and you can't renew it

until you have EAD or GC.

So for many its just convenient to get the driver's license after the EAD,

but if you have need drive sooner, then you can try to get that short term

driver's license...though it may expire and you could run into a gap period

of unable to drive until you receive EAD or GC.

You will need to get your regular license first and taking the motorcycle class waives the written and driving test. In Northern Va they hold it in a community college parking lot on a weekend afternoon.

Yeah...both of my kids went through the driving school,

and they were able to take the written test at the school,

and upon completion of the course, I believe they were handed a

paper that they were able to take to DMV and simply get the driver's license...

I paid around $400 about 6 to 9 years ago...

so it might be higher now.
