Last year on our 2013 taxes we added a Nonresident Souse Treated as Resident statment to claim the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion on my wifes wages before she came to America in September. This year we dont need it as she had no foreign income. If I read the rules correctly we need to revoke the exclusion this year but the TurboTax generared form 2555 is confusing and we arent quite sure what to say in the statement we are supposed to attach requesting the revokation. Can someone advise us on the particulars of what we need to do and perhaps give an example of what to say in the revokation statement? Thanks!

There is no need to revoke the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion. There is no exclusion for 2014 since your spouse didn't have any foreign earned income.

My understanding from reading what I have found online is that since her tax home has changed from Russia to the USA this year that we are required to revoke the exclusion since she would not qualify even if she did have some foreign income. But then the specific K-1 case of using the exclusion in the first place is fairly rare and I have found nothing online referring to this exact situation. Have you actually been through this exact situation?

You are thinking too hard on this. There is no need to revoke anything.

If you do not qualify to use the foreign income exclusion, you simply do not use it.

One thing you need to do is go to the forms view in TurboTax, find Form 2555, and delete the form from your current return. TurboTax will generate anything you had the previous year to jump start you. If you had Donations, it will list them all and you edit to how much this year. If you no longer need a charity, or a form, then delete them.

There is no need to formally revoke anything as has already been stated.

Ok, thanks! You cant be too careful when it comes to the IRS. So I assume that also means that we can file electronically rather than having to do so on paper like we did last year?
