Like @gooblue said, I am talking about when I adjust my k1 visa to green card.
I know I can’t work while I’m on k1 visa, but I’m talking about when I will have started the AOS process to when I actually get my work authorization takes up to 2 years from what I’ve read.

It won't take 2 years to get work authorization.  It took 8 months for us in 2021.  When you file your i-485, you should also file the i-765 (EAD) and i-131 (AP).  The EAD is your employment authorization while AOS is processing.  USCIS shows current processing times for that document as 8.5 months where EAD is based on a pending AOS application.  It may have sped up recently.

Our i-485 was approved in 16 months.  Plenty of people adjusting from k-1 go faster, some go slower.  But I wouldn't expect 2 years to get work authorization.  That should come a lot sooner if you file the i-765 (which is free when based on the i-485 application, so plan to file for it).

My understanding is that Japan does not have an interview backlog correct?

FYI we just got our interview date yesterday for 11/28 which is okay, but honestly a little later than we were hoping for.

I know it probably won't work, but I contacted the embassy asking for an earlier date. Fingers crossed...

I have a question about the police clearance.

The embassy website says that Police clearance is valid for two years. Ours is 8 months old. We're now a week before the interview and the embassy send us the email telling us what documents to bring. They said the police clearance is expired and we need to get a new one. Obviously a week before the interview that's impossible (it's a minimum of two weeks to get the document.) I called the embassy visa hotline, and they told us it was ok to continue the interview if we don't have the proper document, but I'm wondering if the expiration date is a mistake?

It says very clearly on the Japanese US embassy site:

For how long is a Japanese police certificate valid?

For the purpose of applying for the immigrant visa and fiancée visa, two years from the date of issuance.

Obviously if we need a new certificate we will get one. But my wife is on edge about getting another delay over paperwork.

Hi Everybody. I wanted to thank you all for all your questions and responses here. It has been super helpful. I'm a US citizen preparing to submit I-130 for CR1 for my Japanese spouse who's currently living in Osaka. I think I read somewhere that the Osaka consulate doesn't process immigrants, but wanted to check before submitting the online I-130. Anything else I should be aware of - especially around Japan specifics?
