OHIP COVERAGE while in the US

I'm curious- I'm a Canadian citizen but now PR in the US. I left Canada in Jan 2010... would I still be eligible for OHIP in Ontario? I really miss my doctors and level of health care back home and would be willing to travel home ( to Canada) to see my doctors for general check ups... does anyone have any experience with this?

My family (parents/siblings) still reside in Canada so I have a family home there... if that has any bearing...

A quick google suggests you will be eligible 3 months after you move back.

I guess my best bet is to call Ontario Health services to see what my options are... I'm not moving back to Canada but if I could become eligible again after spending 3 consecutive months there , I may be open to that.

Was just wondering if any Canucks have experienced this... :)

Please read the requirements in the link I posted, you have to resident in Ontario... Residence is more than a visit. Also, residing in Canada might ends your PR status in the US.

hey it's cool... Relax.. I'm not gonna do anything stupid. Just asking questions to explore options. There are also exceptions for longer absences ..

and obviously calling them for answers is going to be most accurate. Was just wondering if any one had first hand experience with this vs educated guesses..

I'm not sure how pointing you to the Ohip website is a guess... But, ok.

I've personally lived in other countries (three stays over a year), and only once did I lose coverage... Until I moved to the US and then, I lost it the day I crossed the border - but I was already insured with my husband. Not sure how helpful my experience is as it was a while back.

Directing to a website versus first hand experience are very different things ...

But again, I do appreciate the assistance.

I was hoping to maybe hear from someone who may have had success with accomplishing OHIP whilst living PR in the US. It's nothing personal Montreal/Boston/Boiler

Advising you to commit fraud would be against the term of this site. If it's any help, I'm in a weird situation where my income is tax exempt in the US, and taxed in Canada... Still not eligible to OHIP or any of the provincial health care ( I looked into it as much as I could/ not possible unless I lie)

There was someone on here who used Ohip and ended up with a big bill later. Once you become a US resident it's no longer available. We have members who still work in Canada and they can't use it, there is no wiggle room.
