I am starting a new job, and on Tuesday I am handing in my green card and receiving my citizenship certificate.

So what can I use as proof of work eligibility in the USA?? The citizenship certificate?

Reread the link provided by Hypnos. The information you're asking for is on there.

You need to either a type A document or a type B and type C document together.

The naturalization certificate is a type C document. Since you do not have a type A document to present, you'll need a type B document along with your naturalization certificate.

In other words, you can use your state issued drivers license and your naturalization certificate.

After you get your naturalization certificate take it to the SSA. They will update your social security file so when the employer runs your social security number it will show US citizen. A copy of your driver's license (type B) and a copy of your social security card (type C) should be sufficient. Those are the documents my US citizen ex-husband submitted when starting a new job.

When you fill in the i-9 form, it will ask you questions on the first page - If you are US citizen, PR or other status. Just tick US Citizen.

As an employer, it is not up to us to question the validity of your answes, or even to verify if the ID /SSN card or other document that you give us is legitimate. We have to accept it at face value and accept that what you have filled in is correct and valid.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Federal law requires government agencies and federal contractors to use the E-Verify to verify the legal status of any potential employee. Furthermore, there are 16 states that mandate, to some extent, the use of the E-Verify by private employers as well. In these cases, and employer can be held responsible if they hire an employee who lied on their employment verification form. What I am not sure of, is whether this applies to US citizens as well as those who are working on visas, EADs, or green cards, But I have not found anything that says that this does not apply to US citizens as well.
