Hi There,

My fiance and I have a K-1 app in process .. we are currently waiting on our NOA2. I have read that eventually I (beneficiary) am going to have to obtain background checks (US and Canada as I have lived in both for over 6 months) ... My question is, does anyone know where I can obtain these? And am I able to obtain them before we get our NOA2 just so i have it ready? As i have read it can take up to 3 weeks just to receive them.

Thank you!!

Nicole

I believe the Embassy will run the background checks on you themselves. You need to obtain police certificates, that is all. Your fiance (petitioner) will have background check done when they are processing the I-129F petition, but yours is done at or around the interview stage.

Thank you for the info! .. I am wondering how to go about receiving a police certificate from the States .. I'm hoping I can do it online somehow!

Have you previously lived in the States? If not, you only require a police certificate from the countries you have lived in. If you did live in the states, perhaps this can help? (I apparently missed the part about you having lived in the states... -_- ) Also - you may want to wait on the police certificates as they have a time limit.. If all embassies are the same you cannot have a police certificate older than 30 days from the time of your medical (you may want to check with the US embassy in Canada though) From reading the page below you may want to call the embassy and ask your question - do you require a federal police certificate, a state certificate, or both? Depending the length of stay you may not even require a police certificate at all. Your best bet is to call the embassy and ask - no reason to waste money on obtaining certificates if they won't be needed.

You do not need one for time spent living in the US, the embassy does these checks themselves.

As Peebe said you don't need the US police certificates. I didn't know that and I requested one long time ago. I contacted my County sheriff and gave a power of attorney to my fiance. He didn't have any problems with getting them. I learned later that it's not necessary to have police statement from the US no matter how long you lived there.

You do not need police certificates from any jurisdiction inside the United States. For Canada, the answer is usuially on the web site of whatever police department has jurisdiction in the place you lived.
